As if I don't have enough projects going on at the same time already, I'm thinking about mixing my own diesel fuel. Kerosene is easy to get, but where can I buy ether? When asked the same, the guy at the Home Depot paint dept looked at me like I was an aspiring terrorist.

Starter Fluid for automobiles, not the starter fluid for BBQes.
You have to drain the can into a bottle - glass prefered and be very careful as it is extremely explosive.

I dont think you will find Ether in diesel you buy at the pumps,Ether is used in starting diesel engines when there cold, not for running them.kerosene is just a fine grade of diesel. In a diesel engine to much ether starting them ive seen them blow up,and also lock up the motor.Ether in a Diesel motor is a big no no.

At least in full-sized diesel engines, ether will fry a glow plug. Most big rig diesels do not use glow plugs, so ether is not a problem in moderation.

Maybe times have changed or other fuel materials are now being used. We always used ether in Model Diesel Engine fuel. We then used to buy it at the pharmacy. If they will not sell it to you now they might give you a lead. Somewhere in the US is a supplier called "Dr. Diesel" he sells diesel engines and associated supplies. I do not have an address. He is always at the Toledo show.

Go to your local John Deere Tractor store and buy a couple of cans of "John Deere 80% starting fluid". The name says it all. The cheeper stuff is much less ether.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, model diesel engines do typically require something that is more volatile and has a lower flash point to "kick start" the combustion, especially when cold. Ether does this quite well. Automotive sized and larger diesels often have glow plugs that do the same thing, so ether is neither required nor beneficial.

He probably looked at you like you were a terrorist because raw ether is highly explosive and if its not being blown up its usually being used to cook crystal meth
