Looking for a good 2-stroke oil for smaller Gasoline engine

I have also been looking to get better 2 stroke oil for some smaller gasoline engines, and a friend suggested the STHL Full synthetic 2 stroke oil with stabilizers. I went to Home Depot and Lowes but all they had were many brands of Synthetic Blend 2 stroke oils with stabilizers. The STHL is Full Synthetic but is that a big difference from a synthetic Blend. Also does the stabilizer help the gasoline not gum up from the ethanol. Ethanol is a big problem in California Gas and small air cooled engines don't like it. Right now I am using the Penzoil Small Engine Air Cooled 2 stroke oil and it's good for larger engines 26cc and up -in break in, but for smaller engines like my Evolution 10cc It seems to be running hot in the air with. Runs great on the ground but once in the air it starts overheating. The needles are set on the rich side.

You will get all kinds of answers on this one !
Here is what I use. Klotz RC Model Lube I use it in 5cc engines and up.
I mix it with LL100 aviation gas for use in small gasser engines. Why? Because of the lack of smell compared to regular auto-grade pump gas. The planes can be brought inside the shop after running and not stink it up with the eye burning stench you get from pump gas.
The Klotz smells good too and it doesn't leave much residue at 20:1 ,32:1 and 40:1 mixes.

If that fuel has no Ethanol then isn't that a plus for smaller engines. Or does the Ethanol make a difference to the smaller engines.

flyinwalenda 06-27-2014 04:00 AM

It's a plus especially for engines with Walbro type carbs as the methanol hardens the diaphragms.

In Florida you can get 'Marine' gas that's 90 octane and ethanol free at docks that service boats. Don't know if this is true in other states though...

Stihl Ultra Syn is available at all Stihl dealers. The company holds close on their products so you don't see it at the box stores. This is the only oil I use and I do use non-ethonol high octane because it is available here and all my two strokes do well on it.
That includes several large chainsaws that cost much more than my model engines and they are worked hard at times. I have so far had no problems and plan on continuing with this mix. ;)

Any synthetic two stroke oil from a reputable company will deliver the protection you require for all your two part mix fuelled two stroke petrol engines. Don't overthink this.....but then again what do I know,

Basil Yousif 07-06-2014 02:37 PM

So does the 2 stroke oil whatever type you use that uses a Stabilizer. Does the Stabilizer get rid of the Ethanol or is the only way you can get Ethanol free oil is to buy the Marine gasoline without it. There's also a product at Home Depot called Ethanol Out. You add a small amount to every 5 gallons. Does this stuff get rid of the Ethanol.

TimBle 07-07-2014 04:24 AM

stabilizer allows the ethanolto say in suspension if a little bit of water gets into the fuel. Its also provides corrossion protection.

stabilizer does not get rid of the ethanol.

Just use the E10

Basil Yousif 07-09-2014 10:19 AM

Does the Ethanol Out stuff that you put into gas get rid of it.

flyinwalenda 07-10-2014 03:17 PM

I don't know if it really does. I think it's just snake-oil.

TimBle 07-10-2014 08:34 PM

I am not familiar with ethanol out. Please post an msds CD.

Basil Yousif 07-11-2014 12:42 AM

This is the stuff that is supposed to get rid of ethanol. http://www.starbrite.com/en/startron

One way to get rid of Ethanol is to mix 3 gallons of gasoline with one gallon of water and shake it real good. The ethanol or alcohol will migrate into the water. The gas will separate from the water so you can remove it separately. The only problem is you won't know what the octane is because the ethanol figures into the octane calculation.

I found a gas station near the lake that sells it for boats so I might just get it from them. Much easier but do you think it will make a big difference in the way the small gasser engines run to have that 10% alcohol gone.

TimBle 07-11-2014 09:42 AM

I would not recommend you use that product. Adding water to the petrol increases the amount of water dissolved in the gasoline. The "ethanol out" sounds like something that prevents the water from causing corrosion in the engine and helps stabilise the ethanol that remains behind. The problem with taking the ethanol out is that the distillation of gasoline is affected negatively; you've removed a component that vapourises easily and helps you start a cold engine.
You also take a 2-3 octane number knock (excuse the pun) whrich is about 2 AKI--ll

I suggest adding about 25% methanol and castor oil. The methanol helps desolve the castor oil as well as the water causing the ethanol to gum up. Ethanol will mix with water and gas, but when there is water it will not mix so well with gas thus the gum. Methnol will mix with water gas and ethanol, and it doesn't matter how much of each.

The methanol will also increase the power small gas engines lack. It is cheaper than gas and castor oil is cheap by the gallon.

Castor is now $40/gal from SIG. I was getting it for $23/gallon for the last few years. Getting spendy.

It is $20 dollars from Fox.

I find my engines run hotter on Stihl Ultra...... I now use Lucas 2-Cycle Semi-Synthetic and it keeps the engine cool and clean.

Why you dont use premix 2stroke alkylate fuels?
http://www.stihlusa.com/products/oil...-fuel/motomix/

And aspen. http://www.aspenfuel.co.uk/products/...pre-mixed-501/

I like Redline:

Basil Yousif 02-23-2015 10:09 AM

I just went down to Lowes and got some Synthetic Blend with Stabilizer and it's working great in my Evolution 10cc motor. Runs cool and I have had no problems with the gasoline getting ruined by moisture. There's a bunch of these types of oils for Lawn care equipment now at Home Depot and Lowes. Redline is good but expensive and has no stabilizer. If you fly a lot and use up your gas quick you won't miss the Stabilizer but if you store the gas 2 months or more before using it up you'll see the difference. I couldn't get the Evolution to run without the Synthetic with Stabilizer.

This is the best oil available for air cooled gasoline two stroke engines:

http://splube.com/model-airplane-oil.html

Basil Yousif 03-09-2015 11:08 AM

That looks like good stuff. The gallon price isn't bad. I guess you can add stabilizers to it. The stuff for Model Airplanes is very expensive though at $17 a quart. The STHL fully synthetic with stabilizers is cheaper.

Fuelman 03-09-2015 11:37 AM

You will have no issue adding an ethanol stabilizer to the fuel when you are using SPL Lubricants.
Remember, you get what you pay for!
I have used these lubricants in everything gasoline two stroke for years, from gasser airplanes to chain saws to snowmobiles and dirtbikes, never a carbon buildup, runs cleaner than any synthetic I have ever tested, and never a blown engine.

Basil Yousif 03-09-2015 11:43 AM

I use the Evolution 10cc and the oil level has to be 7oz per gallon. I get a black spray on the plane. Will this stuff get rid of that.
