Default Thoughts on the HPI Baja 5b and the Red Cat Dune Runner

Looking to getting my 1st 1/5 scale vehicle. I like the looks of both the HPI and Red Cat. I like even better the fact that the Red Cat is 4x4. I have owned several 1/10 and 1/8 trucks from AE, Traxxas, and HPI. What are your thought on the build quality and overall performance of these 2 beats?

The Baja is lighter partly due to being 2WD. My Dune Runner ran great but couldn't compete on speed with my Baja. This is due the chassis being more beefier. I liked running both but they are definitely different beasts. The Baja has better aftermarket support for upgrades. The Redcat was tough and I never really broke anything on it. It has since been converted to a TT buggy because I screwed up the tank accidentally and had a hard time finding a replacement.

Thanks for your insight. Not really looking for speed, but a nice overall performer. The price of the Red Cat is also very attractive. As far as after market support. If it's beefy then I can pass on the after market stuff. Thanks again.

I'd get the HPI, much better quality overall.

I know HPI has good customer service and they do have quality vehicles but in this case both look like solid performers.

I would get the HPI over the Redcat in a heartbeat.

I will not say why I would not get a Red Cat but I will say why I recommend a HPI. They have great customer service, they are well supported by stock and after market parts. Parts are easy to get! I do think the HPI baja is the number one selling large scale vehicle in the world.

I all so recommend the SS kit and get a good radio. Large scale is much more expensive then smaller scales no matter which one you get.

One thing I recommend getting no matter what you get. A remote kill switch but not all radios are compatible with them. A 25 to 35 or more pound large scale during a run away is a BIG liability not counting the damage to your vehicle. A remote kill switch is the best insurance you can buy!

Anyone have some recent opinions based on actual ownership of the dunerunner and the baja?
