2-speed tranny from fg at kind cobra is approx. 145 quid which is a bit on the expensive side especially if it doesn't work properly

works fine, note though is it has two one way bearings, these require care to keep them funtioning, as in you must oil them, they can also ingest dirt if not oiled and self destruct. we have seen plenty of very happy two speed customers.

These maybe fine for parking lots but they are full of problems and you can't use them in competition.

great to hear......i have installed it ....i did notice that it can be installed incorrectly...the direction of the gears must be paid attention to...otherwise the spring-loaded claw will come out due to centrifugal force but not engage the gear...i have run it but have not heard the gear change.....i can hear a clear change with my 10th scale .....i will adjust the tension on the spring a bit more and see what happens...but i am very interested in what you said about its maintainance....and the oiling of these one way bearings.....can you give a bit more detail if possible...

If you can find the yankee 2 speed trans its the best! It also uses FG gears or I should say FG uses the same gears since the yankee 2 speed came out first. Oh yea, magically enough the FG 2 speed is a direct bolt on to a Yankee car and vice-versa.

gun oil works great if you can not get one way lube, put three to five drops on the outside before every run, and after running pull the haft assembly out and reoil exsessivly the bearings, onroad 1/8th and 1/10th have similar bearings and they live for years in heavy comp with proper maintence, same applies.

hi,i installed a fg 2speed in my monster beetle and was never happy coz i never heard it shift.after doing some ratio homework worked out that the step between two ratios was so small i more than likely wouldnt hear a positive shift change any way,so i ordered a different gear and when that turned up whipped it apart to start the swap.on strip down i found that the small metal pin that the clutch inside springs out and locks onto, to engage the second gear had been smashed out and damaged the hub so i could not replace the pin.after assessing what was left i decided that replacement of the hub part would not stop the same thing happening again so just chucked s**te in the toolbox for spares.im sure on a touring car or like these would be the muts nuts, but in my opinion for off road where the wheels are loosing traction and then getting a sudden snag of grip, dirt ingestion etc,etc seem to be a inavoidable failure waiting to happen. 120 quid for the 2speed and a score on top for new gears, postage etc is almost a samba pipe which is more than likely the best hopup you could buy.i know in hindsight id rather have a samba for similar money on my marder as well as my monster beetle.!!

I had the two speed in my monster beetle with a 29cc engine and a samba pipe. When I was running it had the 46 44 gears on it that it came with and when it hit second gear it was going so fast that it was scary. You could see how much the tires were out of balance running in dirt. I had no problems with it i just could'nt see running it when the car is already faster than i need. It would be easy to just leave the longer clutch bell and spur gear shaft in the car and then switch between the single and two speed. If you install the two speed exactly how the diagram shows it you will have no problems, mine shifted a little high for me but i just made a little adjustment and it was perfect.
