Default FG Marder v Smartech Traveller in Australia

I bought a fairly knackered FG Marder off eBay and it needs a lot of parts. Due to the cost of getting these parts to Australia I am considering getting rid of it and buying a Smartech Traveller from my LHS instead. Is the Traveller a decent performng buggy? Is quality and performance acceptable? Or would I be better off fitting Smartech parts to my FG chassis and having a Frankenstein hybrid? To give you an idea of what I need, I've got to get wheels, body, sundry bolts and brackets, and it seems the engine casing is busted, which is $A150 to replace for a start. FG costs are mounting, hence the Smartech option.

You can use Smartech Parts for several of those parts.

Engine on the Smartech is normally a Zenoah G230RC, and the Marder mostly uses the same engine.

Smartech Traveller Wheels fits directly on the Marder and body should fit directly(not 100% sure).

Sorry, my english isn't good enough to know what the rest of the parts you need are.

If you need major engine repair, thn look at getting a "long block" from http://www.davesmotors.com
Long Blocks are complete engines, but without carb, clutch and such.
Davesmotors has long blocks from US$ 60 (G23LH clone) to US$ 175 (SK29cc with Dome Head Kit)

$1695 for a Monster Beetle in Australia? You should fly to California one a year and pcik up all your parts yourself.

$1695 Australian dollars!

That's $1300 US.
That's £735 GBP (still expensive. Usual going rate is £485 new for MB)

Stuff in Australia is expensive anyway.

I thought it was a bit pricey but if you want something yesterday they are handy but I think I'll stick with Ron at Krikke. Good prices good service and advice is first rate.

Jimbo, wouldn't you have to pay Customs Duty + GST for kit orders from Europe?

I haven't mail ordered from Europe before but looking at Krikke's prices, it's 735 Euro for the FG MB, add 80 Euro for postage = 815 Euro = AU$1345 * 1.1 (GST) = AU$1480 incl. taxes.

Are my calculations above correct? [&:]

Your calc's probably are correct but I'm still saving $215 AUD on a monster beetle

edit krikkes price is 617.65 EUR ex tax

OK here are my calcs

from krikke's web site on a MB 617.65 EUR ex tax + 80 eur postage(gestimate) = 697.65 eur

using ebay's currency converter 2.30pm 7/8/05 comes to $1223.42 aud

add 5% customs duty = $1284.59 aud

add 10% GST = $1413.05 aud total

compaired to aspracing.com MB $1695.00 aud

Did I make a mistake? or have they?

Ah! I have forgotten to exclude the 19% tax!

But I guess these folks have to make money somehow, after all - only a "handful" people buy large scale RCs here in Oz compared to the highly affordable nitro.

I will definitely consider them when I need bits and pieces. It will depend on how big my order is and how quickly I need it.
