Default MT5 Shocks, want to make softer.

I have changed out the oil for lighter oil.

Losi oil 50W front, 80W rear, and I vented the wheels from the start.

The truck still bounces like a lumber wagon over rough ground.

What other tips do you have to make the suspension more supple so the truck doesn't bounce around? The arms barely move on rough ground right now.

Softer springs will make the shock softer and more responsive

And how much are springs for the FG shocks?

Probably 200 bucks. Over priced like everything I bet.

I am using all 8 shocks with standard springs and 40wt oil in the front with 45wt oil in the back on my MT5.
I have foam inserts fitted to the tyres and have 2x 3mm holes in the rims with a few 2mm holes in the tyres.
No bounce and the wheels follow rough ground as they should.
It could do with the oil being a bit thicker in the back for really big jumps but for normal driving and small to medium jumps its perfect.

Do you have foam inserts?....and have you drilled a hole in each rim?
I have a 3mm hole on the inside of each rim and it takes the bounce away.

Take 4 shocks off (and the rear anti roll bar). The MB has only 4 shocks and it does not rock and roll nearly as much as the truck.

Remove the stabilizer bar for sure and you can try changing the oil or the pistons to a 4 hole piston in place of the 2 hole it comes with.

OK, some great tips guys.

I'm going to try removing the rear sway bar and then pulling the shocks apart and sanding the pistons for a better fit.

If that doesn't work I'll try using lighter weight oil, and if all else fails I'll pull a shock on each arm and see if it works.

Thanks again guys.

Good question as it would be nice to know the baseline.

But I bet FG just puts any cheap oil in they can get and ships them without knowing.

The crap that FG put in their shocks is like glue....its about 10,000 weight!
Everyone should dump it and put in some good light weight shock oil.

I'm doing some other upgrades to my MT and have taken off the shocks for cleaning - The shock oil is new but, your right it is like honey. (The bee kind)
Could some one tell me if they run with the stock shock spacers on the shocks? (Not sure the name but, the black clips the springs are stiffened with) I would think this also stiffens the ride.
Also where is the best place to get shock oil?

the spacers dont change the spring rate (stiffen the ride) they only control how high it is. i just bought the 6520 spring kit for mine and it feels alot better . im only using 1 shock at each corner and im running 60wt in the front and 70wt in the back.

Did you get your shock oil at the hobbie store or is it something you can get at an auto store?

I have 50wt losi oil in front and back with the medium spring spacers on f/b, and have no swaybar in rear or front. Also sand down the sides of the shock pistons because they are a tight fit. and now it flexes and jumps and takes high speed bumps without the bounce. I mean it's like jello man.[sm=thumbup.gif]

You are kidding right? I went as low as 30wt in the front but went back to 50wt front and 80wt rear and remove the sway bar; much better.

No JK, I made them ask twice. I also asked if there was a translation problem between US and There wt#. They said no its 2000wt. So I'm going to try 50 front 60 rear and give it a try if I don't like I'll change to something else. Seems to work for alot of you guys...

I use 40wt front and 80wt rear with both Marder and MT wheels/tires and it works great for me.... I also use the stock shock spacers that come with the Marder, I didn't need them at first, but once you break in the suspension the springs soften up some.

These trucks are over a thousand dollars.

For that much the shocks should be silky smooth and they should be using high quality silicone oil of average weight to make the truck as suitable as possible for the majority of buyers. Which is bashing.

By not having smooth shocks (sticky pistons and crappy oil) it just furthers my belief that FG is going to either go out of business or really be hurting if the HPI buggy ever takes off. Cause if the HPI sells well then you can guarantee that AE, Losi and others will make quality RTR gas vehicles also.

FG needs to get their act together. This is about the 10th major flaw in my truck so far that FG could have fixed or prevented before releasing the truck.

If they don't they will beleft by the wayside as HPI and the others release their stuff and people buy those instead of dealing with FG and it's horrible distribution, prices and availibility of parts.

I do agree with you on several points. There NEEDS to be competition, if there is none, the manufactures have no worry about improving quality and pricing. In owning an FG I do believe they should have improved on the parts that ALL of us know are the week links. It would not cost them much more to install the items stock and save the bashing. This shock oil out of my MT looks worse then my rc10's shock oil from the 90's and the MT's is brand NEW and I would think improved since then. I still love my truck and will continue using it but these types of problems with a high $$ product just discourages me from continuing with certain manufactures. This is just my opinion sorry for venting.
Here is my new shock oil compared to the stuff I just got from the hobby store - FG is in the glass jar.

When FG takes the short road to give us crappy products, it's like Ferrari putting $40 Walmart tires on the Enzo.

No excuses but being cheap and not caring about your customers one bit.

Funny thing is, my '04 Sportsline Semi has great shocks that are smooth as butter. And it costs LESS than the MT5!!!! What sense does that make????
