Another Melted Spur Gear, GRRRR
I’ve just melted my third spur gear in 2 weeks! I run a 18 metal pigeon and metal spur gear carrier with a plastic 46 tooth spur. I also have alu upper an arms and a gear cover. The meshing is fine too. I run it off road pretty hard, not overly so, thought these things would be able to take a little punishment! Anyone have any ideas what can be causing this as its beginning to really piss me off [:@] !!!
cheers

I've never melted one, it's not a "usual" problem.
Check that nothing's binding or dragging, ie the brake, as this will build up a lot of heat.

take the gear cover off.
You are probably getting the clutch real hot, the heat transfers to the pinion, and then melts the teeth out of the spur, by removing the cover the teeth will disipate heat and the problem should go away. this would look like a clean cut through the middle of the spur gear teeth.

You can also try venting the clutch bell. If you were local, you could send it in to us and we would do it for you on our CNC machine. We run all our clutch bells vented, on and off road.

There will be a steel direct replacement for the Plastic Spur Gears coming up. It will fit right over the existing Gear Carrier just like the Plastic one. Pricing for the Spur Gear will be somewhere around $48.99. They will also be sold as steel gear conversions priced at $69.99.
