Default Eletric Baja B5

If this has been done then I'm sorry but that would be so cool. You would need a STRONG bl system to get it moving has anyone done it or thought about it?

What is cool is that it takes GAS and Hauls *****.
Seriously, I don't think it would be worth the try. I have not seen any thread about it, and I doubt you will. I don't think anyone here would even think about that, but you never know.

there are electric 1/5th scales, FG and harm both have elctric on -roads i think.

but i guess its worth a try for an off road car..... i dont think it will go very fast though

You would also need some big bucks to achieve the same amount of run times as a simple gasoline/oil mix setup, i.e. lipo batteries and probably something like a Schulze lipo charger that can handle charging that many lipo cells. You may also try posting over on the Nomadio thread since if I recall correctly, the Nomadio rep has a brushless H.A.R.M.

plus a big enough brushless system too handle that big car too boot

We don't have to conform to the tree huggers. I will keep useing gas two strokes. Espically since you can't port an electric motor.---what fun is that?

i think it is a really cool idea. maybe a lehner 2240 or 2250 motor. if done right i bet it would probably beat the pants off the gassers.

and it would take alot of time to charge the thing.

I'd rather a 2 min refuel and a 90 min runtime

rather than a 6min runtime and 2 hour charge

There are plenty of high powered brushless set-ups that would easily power a 1/5 scale car to (and well beyond) the speeds and run times of a gas engined buggy.

Lehner has a number of motors that would work, as does Plettenburg (in fact, their "Bolido" motor is designed specificly for this application). Any 100+ amp esc would work, especially if running higher voltage (Quark, Shultze, etc...).

Now that LiPo packs are available in 12,000+mah configurations, a 30 minute+ run time is definately possible.

The problem becomes cost. Motor is $300-$600, ESC is $250-$500, and Batteries would be $250+.

It's be easy to do and provide FAR more tourque and RPM's then a comparible gasoline engine...............but at 4+ times the cost.

Is it worth it?

It would depend on the depth of your pockets, and the extent of your desire to be different.

A nice plettenberg would certainly get the job done.

Now don't be so certain about easily beating the gassers. One guy above mentioned 8000 watts (The rest I had no idea what he was talking about--hehe). If my math is correct, that is 10.73 hp. Thats a lot, and I don't think I can get that (naturally aspriated) out of a RC Zen type engine (23cc-30.5cc). I think I am getting close to 8hp though (BIG bore --on Reed cases)--and thats about 6000 watts---I think.

But-------can we use the bigger engines too? We do have bigger engines than a 30cc ya know. (probably not without a new chassie)

And a question for ya---How much do you think that 8000 watt electric set up would weigh? (I have no idea).

I would have to believe both of these set ups would surpass what the chassie can handle.

hi

there is no question that a adequately powered brushless e baja5b would be extremely powerful. the big lehners can constantly deliver 11'000watts (shortly it would be more) and can go up to 50'000 rpm if voltage is high enough. the instant extreme high torque would put enormous stress on the rear cups, tires etc. but theoretically it would make that thing make constant wheelies i think. actually a much lighter setup (less batteries) with a bolido (around 5000watts) or smaller lehner would easily do the job. but the potential is huge.

as it has been said above its all up to your preferences and budget constraint.

it would only be fun if you have enough lipos at hand to drive at least for 2h or so. very highlevel charger etc is a precondition too. quite a lot of money.

bye

i think the brushless setup with lipolys would/could probably weigh less than the 2 stroke engine? [&:]

Rhylsader hits the nail on the head. Car will be lighter than the car with the Zen. Run time approximately 12-15mins now. There is running a rs5 electric project now it is on-road though but run-time would be similair.

8HP out of a more or less standard 30.5 engine.
[:-]
That is awfull much, be happy when you get 5HP with that kit when you have a decent pipe on.

But is it fun without noise?
Besides I would miss the smell of 2-stroke [sm=biggrin.gif]

the smell of a little castror mixed with synth+ the noise brings these 'toys' into a mans world, i hate to think that anybody would want to detract from this and fit a sterile electric motor?[:@]

Ya, the sound & smell of Gas is pretty sweet.

Unfortunately, it's also the one main limiting factor of these vehicles. There are MANY places around that I'd love to take my MCD, but can't because of the noise. An electric version would easily fix that issue. Not to mention, the turbine-like whine of a large brushless motor is pretty damn cool too!

8 hp would be from a 30.5 cc fully race ported and tricked out reed case engine and a quality tuned pipe, if im not mistaken.... not a stock 30.5 which is aobut 3.6 to 4.1 hp stock. only after the port, crank, and gasket work and a tuned pipe would you see that much hp...

Now. if beign Noisey was the issue then i would say go electric with it. the brushless motors, batteries, and escs have made leaps and bounds forward progress in the last few year. but even with that the amount and size of the betteries needed, even with LiPoly batts, would surely outweigh the stock gas componants. and even if run times made 30 minutes, after 10 or 15 the batterys will be low enough you ll notice a major change in performance. now maybe when we learn how to use and then construct/ manufactuer/mine Zed ZPM power quartz chystals, then you can have EONS of run time. but until that happens, you ll be limited to 15 or so minutes, as to drive for 30 would entirly have the car carrying WAY to much weight in batterypacks....

its a great Mod. and it would be nice to see someone try it, buf if i have a grand for the baja and a grand for the electric parts needed, then i d have an OnRoad F1, and that would be much better to me than a baja i can run for 15 minutes and charge for 3 hrs.
