It would make the most financial sense for HPI to milk the RTR dry before releasing the SS.

I'm sure it'll happen at some point, but it would require a new chassis and overall design - something RC makers no longer care about. Now days it's all about changing the tires and the body, calling it a new vehicle. Look at Losi for example.

That is sad but true. For example, in nitro, Traxxas took the Revo and made the Slayer and Slash (E Revo mod I think).

I wonder if it would be possible to take the 5T chassis and simple redesign the suspension (arms and al) to have an MT underbelly clearance?

Well the Slash has nothing to do with the Revo, its based off their electric 2wd platform like the Rustler and Bandit. The Slayer though, yeah its a Revo with a Slash body, short arms, and small tires.
