made the uprights tonight

M8 bolts welded into big washers,

welded and cleaned up

ball ends make good ......well.... ball joints LOL

using the arms from my 1/3scale buggy project... but gave it the ass as its sloppy and rusty etc so will be making new arms tomorrow

mock up

been thinking... the hummer body is not in proportion... of course coz its a kids toy... its too short for the width so should i cut and lenghen it to look more realistic or leave as is???

Cheers

I'd probably cut and lengthen it myself.
Looks a bit cartoony as it sits there at the moment....

Although it is kinda cool
Kinda like those Dub City toy cars.

Maybe make up some pimpin' hubcaps?

I've just started to make the front end for my huge build as well.
All I can say mate, is that it's gonna be pretty similar to yours.
Pics tomorrow hopefully.

starting the the front end today....

its all going to be segmented so the front end which will be in one piece and contain the steering, front sus, steering servo, etc
will bolt onto the rear end which will contain the driveline , fuel tank, rear sus etc

anyhoo

i need to squeeze a shock into this spot... coz i dont wanna mess around with counter lever shocks....i dont mind sacraficing a little steering lock for ease of shock placment

next will be steering and shocks

made a start on shocks today....... man what a hassle!!! went through 5 different designs, trial , error, ,throwing stuff, lol

couldnt effectively mount shocks normally so i had to resort to inboard shocks (,counter lever,,,bell crank,, etc) which i didnt really wanna do but ohh well

seatled on a good easy design using gas struts

made a sleeve to fit into the shock body and the endcap...giving me an area to drill and tap a fill hole and possibly to drill and tap another hole for a ressie

i soldered them together to seal it then tac welded for strength

the shaft is hardened steel so welding a bolt on the end was the only way LOL

one side assembled

next is the other side then steering.....

Nice one mate.
I've started to think about this home made shock business again.
I like your idea with making the little end cap bit.
Something I can do now that I have a lathe....

Did you do anything to the washer that's on the end of the shaft?

Cut slits in the side or anything like that to let the oil pass through?

Also, when you say that you soldered them together..... what do you mean by that?

yeah theres a washer in there that acts as a oneway pass for the oil... so i welded it still ,then cut slits in the side to let oil pass like ya said

i used plumbers solder to join it all together coz i only have an arc welder... its very hard to weld water tight with an arc lol so i soldered it first..
