Carburetor help

Hey guys I just picked up my first 30cc 1/5 scale car the other day for $320 (was that a good buy?). It starts but only runs when feathering the throttle. I don't know anything about the car not even what it's called but i'd like to tune it up.

Seems like a fuel problem so first I'm looking at a new carburetor. The old one didn't have a model #, it just says ruixing. I found one that "looks" right. It's a ruixing 997. Then I found other brand 997s that also look right. Will any of these work? I'd really prefer to buy the off brand that comes with fuel lines and everything...

Got any other advice for me for my first 2 stroke car?

Well I ordered the car hub one. I'm not sure if I'll keep it but I wanted to get it ordered just in case. In the meantime I pulled the carb, partially disassembled it, and drenched it with carb cleaner. Did the same thing with the spark plug.

Reinstalled both and still no change. Its hard to get it to start and when it does it will only run for a minute (while I feather the throttle the whole time).

Anybody have any tips for me?

Not alot of information to go on. A couple of things to try . Take the air filter off while your trouble shooting. Does the primer bulb on the carb work? Push the primer bulb while it's running will let you know if it's running lean or rich. Check all the fuel lines and any filter. Check the clunk if it's felt. Does it have good spark at the plug.

Thanks for the reply.
The primer bulb does work. Pulled the air filter and no change. To check for spark would I just pull the plug, stick it into the wire, put it near some metal and pull the cord? I'll try playing with the primer but it's hard because it doesn't stay running long.

Ok the car won't start at all. I checked for spark and didn't see any. Pulled the kill switch button off (didn't unplug it) but then put it back and checked one more time for spark and now I have spark... Pulled the cord and it started now. Turned the idle screw up a bit and it ran perfect. Played with it for a few mins, let it idle, everything ran great so I put it away.

An hour later I tried it again and couldn't get it to start. Finally got it to start and its only running while feathering the throttle again. I could have done something wrong when checking for spark at first but right now I'm thinking I have an intermittent spark issue??

Oh and when it was running I pressed the primer bulb and it revved up really high for about 1 second

sounds like the engine would need to be broken in. Had the same issue with a cy230 thats old but new. the engine had to be broken in, spark plug changed, it needed a new carburetor and a good tune. make sure your flywheel is good and coil is good.
the spark plug was the biggest issue with running.

Thanks for the info. I bolted on the new carb, fuel lines, and fuel filters today and it fired right up and idled pretty good. It did start revving on its own a bit but I'm sure the new carb just needs tuned. I will go ahead and replace the spark plug regardless. One other thing I noticed is that it only runs with the choke half opened. If it's fully opened or fully closed it dies immediately. Is that normal?

when the engine is cold it is normal to use choke half way open. so yes it is common for the engine to die when choke opened to soon. more or less is the spark plug causing the engine to die down. so part 1.partially clogged carburetor. problem 2 spark plug. both together was and partially is likely the same problem. replace the plug, retune the engine and let it idle for several minutes. that will work if it is only the spark plug left to replace.
