that sucks dude. i am sure someone will come up with stronger gears yet. i personally think there is a need for somekind of cover for the diff as the rocks get it there and chew up the diff cases.

An alloy diff housing is a must, unfortunately it's not exactly cheap.
A reinforced diff tube would be a good idea, but the housing is more important.

prices vary from 100-300 depending on the diff, and if it were a upgrade kit or a complete diff, should be able to get through any FG dealer.

Hi RAWPWR
The part # you are looking for is
#8484 diff conversion=$76.18 or
#8483/05 complete diff=$151.45
FG makes a few diffs but the off-road cars can only use the Diffs that have the Flat alum. diff cover.
The off-roads have a lowered rear diff. Does not allow room for adjustable diffs.

Have a Nice Day!

If you want to use the Self Locking difs, or the adjustable difs on a FG Off-Roader you have two options.

1: Get the rear dif Raiser blocks (#4478)
2: Cut a grove in the plate for the ring on the diff, just like there is one for the gear wheel.

I have the Allu diff.(#8483/5) on my FG Leopard. I plan on putting in the 2 way self locking upgrade(#8497), someday, when I get the time.

Or maybe if there is a good one on eBay, I will try to get a 4 way self locking diff.

Happy driving from Greenland

RE: broke diff on MB

sometime what happens is the case breaks near the bearing support, this is due usually to a large rock coming under the case and forcing the case upwards as it passes, also it can happen on extreme hard side landing were you force the dogbones into the side of the case and it cracks the plastic.

what happens next is as you apply force to the dif the case moves allowign the spyder gears some play, as soon as one gets enough play the force is only on one tooth and the gear snaps, one breaks then it multiplys and soon you have four very exspensive broken gears.

best method to avoid.. if you hear a weird click, and you can not find a exterior gear with a chip, stop and take the diff apart( you may only need one gear at this point) .

best prevention, alloy case upgrade, adjustable is nice, and our preferance is to cut the chassis to keep dogbones as level as possible without lowering the ride ht.

The alloy conversion is pretty reasonable, check with a dealer for acurate pricing.

in our onroaders the plastic diff will last forever, as it is the rocks that cause the stress, in the offroaders depending on were you run we have seen easily a years worth of hard running out of a stock diff and case, some of that is just luck as to what the enviroment is you run in.

And remember you may not know when you strees the case the gears will not slip then they will usually fail in a high traction condition after the case is cracked or broken. Also the cover and its dents have no influence on the insides of the diff, the plastic carrier is what controls the gears and there position.

RE: broke diff on MB

good point ammdrew but can that make so hard noise. the sounds what it make looks like if the to big gears 48/16 going over each other.

ammdrew 12-03-2004 02:17 AM

RE: broke diff on MB

the case when broken can actually move enough to let those gears slip without any damage or sign of broken teeth.
if the internal gears are broken, you can usually feel that by rotating the diff and holding the brake and one tire to put some force and you will find the bad spot..
