Bullet proof diff?

I am breaking the plastic diff housings on my Fire Hammer at an alarming rate!!!! I have had an aluminum housing on back order with Tower Hobbies for months. Anyone know of a fairly equal or better diff than the one offered by Tower? I am not interested in the $300 Vicos diff.

The basic FG alloy diff housing (FG #8484) is less than $100 and you can reuse you bevel gears. You can get it from FG Performance RC or RC Nuts. The attached picture shows the housing. I think it also includes an outer sleeve.

I put an FG 8485 limited slip unit in my car. I needed new bevel gears so I had to go with the full assembly and had to have new FG outdrives too. If you reuse your FH bevel gears you can use your FH outdrive cups.

BTW - If your shims are not reuseable, don't forget to order more with the diff case.

I just ordered a new #fg 8484 case and it came with shimms, so I wonder if they only packing shimms with certain ones?I put this unit in my stock firehammer with a new ball drive conversion.I also bought a Fg#8484 kit a couple months back(for my 29cckitted hammer) and it came complete with all the gears:D what a deal for only 86.00, so someone messed up on that one:D

I ordered both of mine from here

handaman should have mentioned from his personal experience..... if you change your diff from the Hammers brand to a FG brand..... you will also have to change the output cups/rear drive cups and the Bones to the FG brand[sm=thumbup.gif]

You only need FG outdrive cups if you use FG bevel gears. chevyman_de mentioned they (at HobbyThek) put Carson bevel gears into FG alloy housing often if the bevel gears are in good shape. If you bevel gears are hosed (mine were sheared off pretty badly) then get the FG gears and FG drive cups.

One other thing - FG makes a small bevel gear mounting tool FG #8505. It is a cross-bar thing that helps sandwich the gears together for placement into the diff housing. The tool is about $8 USD and will keep you from pulling your hair out trying to get the gears in place.

Also pick up some heavy grease from an auto parts store. I used Lucas 'Red and Tacky' grease. You will want to ensure a good coating of grease on the gear teeth.

This is the limited slip diff assembly instructions. It is close to what you will need to do with the 8484 case.

it is pretty simple to change over "even a caveman can do it" and you really do not need the 8.00 tool, I just use the cross bar that is already in the buggy...........;) remember those "crossover" lists are not all acurate either, they said the can mix and match the FG gears with the hammer gears, and you cannot.....
