Official HPI Baja 5 Thread (5T, 5B, 5B SS)

this is the official baja thread. if it is a baja 1/5th scale it is allowed.

included bajas:

5B
5B SS
5T

the reason for this thread is

there are already a lot of miscellaneous baja questions and threads for only one of the bajas out there. so why not join together so we can all help each other out.

An official HPI thread should not have clones in it.

I have been wanting to do a 5T conversion, either with the Proline setup or HPI parts. HPI parts are impossible to get for one, and man... The full Proline treatment is $325 for everything (body, desperado wheels, excavator tires). Usually eBay chop shops are good for parts but there are 0.0 parts available for a conversion and what is available is being marked up good. $280 for an HPI 5T body is just too much...

I have a 5B SS that I am building. I will not run it till I have all the up grades I want for phase 1. So far I have the Turtle complete clutch system orange, Turtle HD Tranny plate orange and the Threshold Shock High Pressure seal kit with Umbrellas seals and install tool. See links below.

I am waiting for the Turtle HD front top plate to be back in stock in orange.

i'm purchasing the teamgonads rtr baja package. i really want to get a ss version but for $50 more i could get a DDM pipe and a full set of sand tires mounted on rims. it's a deal i just can't pass up.

so far i have $250 towards it but hopefully the snow we are about to get will bring in another $50. and i can sell my rc18t and my schwinn chopper if i need money.

Got my High Pressure Seal Kit (Umbrella Seals) for the shocks yesterday so I will be building my shocks for my 5B SS this weekend. These are nice.

Try a DDM Dominator or Jetpro. Their larger expansion chambers pull out the power of these engines by giving great return pulses, and moreover, they are a bit quiter too becaus of the large internal volumes of the chambers allow the gasses to expand further, thus expending their noise and heat energy. At low RPMs, I am surprised how cool these pipes actually are to the touch! (Now, when you gas it at full trigger, that pipe will get hot! Large expansion chamber or not!)

if you want low end, i know a couple people here are putting DOM silencers on and x-can. tons of torque, thats what i'm doing when i get mine.

im sorry but a buddy of mine has a rear dom and its loud enough to break an egg AND fry it. meilke is the quietest i do believe but its not a real performer.

The X Can is not the best pipe no matter what you do to it. I hate a side pipe but being the the side Dominator numbers are so good might get it if not the rear Dominator and when need be put the DDM silencer on it. :D

The rear one I believe does not have near the same chamber volume as the long one (or side one). So, because of the reduced chamber volume, less space the exhaust has to expand to release some of the sound and heat energy. And the side Dominator also has one other silencing trick up its sleeve: Deflection! Since the stinger is not at the direct end of the pipe, like the rear one is, that deflection of the side stinger has a significant effect in reducing noise.

Damn, I suppose it was only a matter of time before we started getting these 'official' threads in here. We did so well for so long.

46u, the side dom has a built-in silencer and it's still loud, but not unmanageably so.

I do not know what all gearing is available for the stock 5B but you can get 16,17 and 18 tooth pinion gears for it. You all so can order it with any of those 3.

Check out DDM.

I know RC4WD has 16/58. 19/55, and a few others.
