HPI 26 CC bearings

Anybody else having probelms with the clutch side bearings?
I just replaced an engine cause of this and my T has some play in it already.

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

How many gallons do you have on it? I have at least 3 gallons on mine with out a problem. I recommend if you are going to replace them to get the Team Fast Eddie bearings. I am building 3 engines and putting TFE bearings in all 3 from the get go.

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

the stock CY bearings are not very good
ive never had any luck with Chinese bearings in high rpm .... Japanese work best IMHO

when your looking for new bearings make sure they're not chinese.... jap ones arnt that much different in price so dont risk it
:)

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

I was told that the stock clutch vibrates just enough to cause the chinese bearings to get eaten up.
I am not sure how many gallons are through my T and the B is still on its first tank I just started leaning it for power.

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

I ran the stock clutch for about 2 gallons and for the past gallon plus I have been running the Lauterbacher adjustable off road 4 shoe clutch. So far no play what so ever. But when or if I replace them I sure would not get the stock CY. This is what I have to run in the three engines I am building. $13 a pair

I have thought about the 4 shoe but I will just keep the High stall clutch from HPI till I put a better engine the 2.
I was hoping to get more then 2 gallons through these engines

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

Nice thing about the Lauterbacher 4 shoe off road is you can adjust it to engage where you want. I have mine set where I think it is a little higher then the HPI stock SS clutch. If you get a Lauterbacher make sure it is the 4 SHOE OFF ROAD as people are having problems with there 3 shoes even the new one that just came out a couple months ago. All so get the TFE crank bearings.

From my experience, the 8,000 RPM spring on the stock HPI clutch is part of the problem causing the pre-mature bearing failure. I tested this on 3 engines & had the same results on all 3, with different amounts of use on each of them. The 4 shoe clutch will stay better balanced & allow the bearings to last a bit longer. I run the Elcon & have had much better luck with bearings, since installing this clutch.

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

Are you getting end play or up and down play?

looker2756 10-06-2009 03:33 PM

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

Mine were up & down. Like bad bearing all together. All 3 engines died & would no longer run even. I've never seen end play get bad enough to cause any issues.

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

I have been building motorcycle engines for well over 35 years and other then the PRE 1954 Harley s the specification on them call for VERY little end play. Build many 2 cycle motorcycle engines as well. I just checked my stock CY 26 and it has a lot of end play guessing .010 or more. What is an except able limit?

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

The only place I could find any specializations was on the Zen and max side play is 0.5mm and mine has 0.305mm so all is good. :D

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

when the bearing starts to go it has side to side play
My T has started and you can tell by the way it's running.
So I think over the winter I am going to tear it down and put some good bearings in it like mentioned earlier and see if that is the problem is the cheap bearing and the stock clutch.
Fast Eddy bearings are the way to go right???

I have 3 engines I am building and will be running TFE bearings in all of them. I bought 3 complete bottoms ends off eBay CHEAP complete with cases, crank, flywheel and clutch covers. Then I bought a GP290 top end and a 30.5 kit. I all so bought a stock 26 top end off eBay CHEAP. I recommend the standard TFE bearings. :D

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

I just wonder how long the engine will last with a different clutch system on it and the stock bearings.
That is a bit of work just to change that bearing out.

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

On my stock 26 I have about 2 gallons with the stock clutch and about 1 1/2 gallon with the LB 4 shoe clutch. At this point I have know up and down play and the side play is with in tolerance. I checked a brand new CY bottom end and the side play is with in .001 of my 3 plus gallon bottom end. I all so like the LB 4 shoe clutch much better then the stock one!

Right now I am working on a ported GP290 matching the case and cylinder so I have a spare for Diggers Dungeon. I will be putting TFE bearings in it.

let me know how that modd engine runs
that was the one I was going to put in my T but I don't have the money right now

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

I've recently had 2 motors that had bad bearings, when the bearing wobbles it takes out the seal and you get an airleak, I replaced the bearings with fast eddies in a 28.5 and went with ceramics in a 30.5...they are definitely good for more revs...the 30.5 revs like the 28...I'll be going with ceramics from now on, worth the extra few bucks.

I agree with 46u, the 4shoe off road laut clutch is the bees knees....in a regular 2 shoe the clutch gets hot and so does the spring which then loses some of it's rating and engages too early...I'm sure everyone has noticed that when you first fire up for the day and take off it's crisp and no bog but as it warms up you get that low end lagging off idle, it's really noticable with ddm and hpi springs....the laut clutch cures that (as does the elcon no doubt) and it takes off consistantly where ever in the rev range it's set.... the difference is night and day , after i tried one i ordered another for my second rig straight after, I can't rate these clutches highly enough

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

mooman007uk how many gallons did you have on the motors before the bearings went? I am starting to think my nitro engine hold up better.

mooman007uk 10-12-2009 02:38 PM

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

about 3 on one and 2 on the other give or take, the cy bearings just don't hold up, I have a 3rd bottom end that's a spare and those bearings are ******* too...I'm wondering if it's the stock clutch as mentioned...low grade bearings + an unbalanced clutch is not a good combo

46u 10-12-2009 02:51 PM

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

As stated above I have about 2 gallons on my stock CY 26 with the stock clutch and about 1 1/2 with the LB 4 shoe clutch with the original bearings and do not have any wobbly I do have end play but it is with in Zen specks as well as with in .001 of a new bottom end. I will found out at Diggers Dungeon as this is a 3 day event and I am sure I will but at least a couple gallons on it. But have no fear as I am taking a NEW spare engine.

Like I said seems like these engines give out before nitro. [X(]

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

When i first got my ramp i drove it about every day for an hour, till I hit the 2 gallon mark, than it would not idle and ran like crap and i could not figure it out, finnaly after a while i knew i have a air leak, it was the cheap cy case bearings, so i put the TFE Bearings in and now im on my 6th gallon and still going good, so the Team fast Eddie breaing are awsome. I have a quick question also i want to buy this motor [link]http://www.davesmotors.com/s.nl/c.885035/n.1/it.A/id.4449/.f[/link] but are the breaing in this one still junk are did CY fix there bearing issue

Just curious what oil and ratio are people running?

monsterbrad 10-14-2009 11:23 AM

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

I run 6oz of Klotz to 1 gallon seems to work good but there is still this bearing issue but then again the engines are made in china so I don't expect much
I hope to have ZEN's in my car and truck here eventually but they are more expensive then the CY

46u 10-14-2009 12:50 PM

RE: HPI 26 CC bearings

The reason I asked I was trying to find out if some where running 32 to 1 or even with less but 6oz to a gallon is even more then 25 to 1 because 5.12oz is 25 to 1. I run 5oz to a gallon. So it kill my thoughts that it might be the oil ratio killing the bearings. Like I said I have well over 3 gallons on my stock 26 and no wobble in the bearings. Then on the other 3 engines I am building I will be installing TFE bearings from the get go. :D Yes I will get a Zen one day when there 36mm top end comes out.
