Default Electric Setup Question?

Hey guys, I have a Graupner EED 400 Brushed motor with a Jeti JES 20amp 4-14.4volt speed control. It was in a great little flying plane but it used Ni-cad battery setup that never work well so I want to change it over to a LIPO battery.

Is it possible?

What Lipo battery would be the best suited for this motor and speed control? It had an 8 cell in-line flat battery pack.

Your help is greatly appreciated...Thanks...Mike

Does the JETI speed control have programmable cut off voltage? If so can you set it to the proper cuttoff voltage for a 2S pack which is 6 volts? If you can set it to 6 or slightly higher than 6 then you can easily switch over to LIPO packs. If you can't adjust it then you may have some troubles in store. LIPO's don't like to be either discharged to too low an output or charged to a voltage higher than their max permissable. They respond rather violently when either occurs.

Typically Nicads have an accepted cutoff of 1.1 volts per cell. So if you can set your ESC to "6 cells" of nicads for the cutoff then it'll shut down your Lipo a little early at 6.6 volts. But that should still give you lots of flight time from a 2S pack. You may just want to go with a slightly higher capacity to make up for the fact that the ESC will shut down a little early.

And don't forget that you MUST get a proper Lipo charger just in case you didn't know that already. It is not optional. The good news is that some decent cell balancing chargers can be had for very cheap when bought online.

Good advice.

Iwill say that some people run those Speed 400s on 3S packs, but the motors will wear out sooner.
