I live within 10 miles of south mountain parkin n.c. but didnt know they had a flying field.

The satellite view really looks like the entire park is solid hardwoods.

Looks like there is a ranger station and some camping at what is probably the center of the park property: 3001 South Mountain Park Avenue, Connelly Springs, NC

Looks like there aren't many accesses into the park except that one. But it's always worth investigating. Being not very far SW of Hickory puts it in reach, but the summer satellite view shows solid green where brown showed in the winter view. Suggests hardwoods.

NC is a beautiful place to live, but darned if the trees aren't everywhere.

If someone who lived close to the park, say about 10 miles or so had time to run up there and talk to the Rangers they'd be doing a couple of us around Mocksville a big favor. We've scouted and scouted and come up dry for some years now. We basically fly powered gliders at a couple of the power fields, but they're not really good glider sites. Too many trees too close. Pretty much like the Lump which gets good press from those who haven't seen even average slopes, but isn't even a halfway good slope.

I was at the park Sunday afternoon and didn't really see any good spots to fly. I'm always on the spy for a place and really don't think this is one.
I've been meaning to ride up to the top of Burkemont Mtn in Morganton to check it out for slope activity. They used to hang glide off of it back in the 70s.
