G'day ,Hallooooo , Guten Tag........anybody out there building and finishing their kit ? What is it that makes people stop building something so beautiful as a Cloud Bound 4 .
You can't do this to Ray Hayes . Finishing a kit of this calibre is character building....adds credibility to a builder ! Mine is on order.....come to think of it....I may end up finishing this thread .

Hi, All. I picked up a CB4 kit through eBay, but as luck will have it, no instructions. Would be willing to pay a nominal fee for a copy of the instructions if one still exists. Please PM me if you would be able to help out.
Thanks!

Build continuation
I blew the dust and cobwebs off to resume building my Cloud Bound 4 after a hiatus of 17 years. I can't believe it's been that long. Man time flies!
I was on a roll until beginning the left inner wing panel. Then I became frustrated trying to build the wing with differences in the Skybench kit and the original design. Also the ribs had to be trimmed to fit and was much more difficult to build than I anticipated. Nevertheless, now I am determined to finish the model whatever it takes.
I finished installing the spars, ribs and sheer webs on the left panel and looks really cool. The original designer said in the RCM construction article that he borrowed the V-pattern for the ribs from the Grand Esprit.
My next step is to build the right wing panel to same point. Then I can check the dihedral and incidence before gluing the brass tubes.
Has anyone finished their Cloud Bound 4 and flown the model?

I prepared the bottom sheeting for right inner panel. Next I will glue the pieces together including cap strips for the ribs.

I finished the bottom sheeting and cap strips for the right panel. Laminated the carbon cap strip on the lower spar. Installed the lower spar and ply ribs 1-5. Installed the leading and trailing edges and all of the ribs in front of the spar. Next is the sheer webs and rear ribs with the V pattern.
Anything I could find for weight on the lower spar.
Wing sheeting, cap strips and lower spar completed.
Top spar has not been glued in this picture. I still need to install the 3/8" balsa vertical grain sheer webs before gluing the spar.

I still need to finish the sheer webs and V-ribs on the right panel but did a quick mockup. I had to be careful not to bump the wingtips on anything and the outer polyhedral panels still need to be installed for 144" span. The CB-4 is a big sailplane.

My build is temporarily on hold. I had to order some spruce for the spars. I used the last piece of 1/8 x 3/8 spruce for the lower spar on the left outer wing panel. The only spruce remaining in the kit is smaller 1/8 x 1/4. I guess Skybench must have supplied the smaller spruce for the outer wing panels. I don't know why else they would be in the kit. Nothing is mentioned in the instructions about different size spars. Oh well, I'd rather have the same size spar from the root to tip anyway. I also needed another 1/16x3x48" balsa sheet. Theres only 1 remaining in my kit and I need 2 for the top sheeting. Also needed a couple 36" sheets for top sheeting but had them in my stash.
National Balsa was the only place I found that sells spruce and balsa. They have a minimum order of $25 so I added a few extra pieces for my stash. I look forward to receiving the spruce sticks and continuing the build.

National Balsa has great service. I placed my online order on Tuesday and received an email confirmation today that my order has been shipped. It was about 48 hours between ordering and shipping.

Some of the ribs were slightly too short for some reason but easy enough to fix. I just added strips of balsa and sanded to match the spar.

I beefed up the polyhedral joint. I installed 3/8" vertical grain balsa sheer webs between the spars on both sides of the polyhedral joint. Also doubled the ribs and made a larger ply brace behind the spar. I am using one of the smaller ply braces that came with the kit in front of the spar.

Parts laid out to build the right outer panel. I ran short of full length carbon cap strip so have to make the last one from 3 pieces. I will put the 2 smaller pieces toward the tip on the top spar.

I finished the right outer panel except for the top sheeting and wing tip. Now l have all four panels built to the same point. This is the first time I used my mobile phone to take a picture and post the message. It's faster but prefer my laptop with a bigger screen.

I sanded the trailing edge on the left inner wing panel to the correct angle and began building the flaps. Also had to sand the leading edge of the outer flap to the correct height and angle. I wish the kit had more preshaped parts but enjoying the craftsmanship needed to build this model. I have wing servos! Now trying to figure out what control horns to use on the flaps. I guess some type of horn glued into the flaps.

I've never built a sailplane with flaps or ailerons so needed a break to research the control horns and servo installation. Also needed to devote some time into my 1985 Monte Carlo SS project. I am looking forward to finishing the Cloud Bound 4 and my Monte Carlo.

I decided to use Carl Goldberg nylon control horns for the flaps. I reinforced the area with a 1/32 ply plate and added a couple ribs to secure them with epoxy.

I assembled the airframe to check the wing rod alignment and used epoxy to secure the brass tubes to the ribs. Looks like the plan shows boxes built around the brass tubes. I think this boxed area gets filled with a micro balloon and resin mixture.
The Cloud Bound 4 makes my Monte Carlo look small. Lol
My Monte Carlo is almost ready for the road. I just need to install the metal plates and seals for the t-tops.
