RE: NEED A SNIFFER
Funny thing is they do not tell you the weight of it. What do you think the intended glider size is? 3 to 4 meter minimum?
Is there anything out there for two meter gliders?

RE: NEED A SNIFFER
jetmaven, with all the talk here about the picolario, I forgot to mention the "other" vario, the Skymelody
It is also made in Germany, and available here in the US from Dean at [link]http://www.xcsoaring.com[/link].
The Skymelody base unit is a "non-talking" vario, you get indication of lift/sink, and indication of low battery voltage by a low buzzing tone.
The base unit is a little cheaper than the picolario ( $ 340.- vs $ 369.- for the picolario ), however, the receiver they sell , a Uniden 100 Bearcat scanner/receiver, is more expensive than the one picolario sells.
With an add-on module for the Skymelody, the Skypanel, you get voice readout of altitude, voltage, and other parameters plus additional functions, but that's another $ 275.-

RE: NEED A SNIFFER
You really should not need a special receiver for the picolario since it uses FRS frequencies. You can buy a cheap frs radio for $20 that will do the job. I think the US version of the Sky Melody may use FRS frequencies, but they say that the transmission signal is fixed. The picolario allows you to set the transmission channel. Kind of nice.
