Micro sloping
In Denmark we dont have any mountains, but we have a long cool coastline with nice dunes. In this thread I will show that micro sloping/DS is real cool, with the right size and type glider. Starting with theese: More will come.. Will try to post a few a week http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ades_smile.gif Cheers S </p> |
RE: Micro sloping
Your sea wall dynamic soaring sure doesn't leave much room for any mistakes.... :D It's pretty great that it's possible to dynamic soar even off a micro slope of this sort.

RE: Micro sloping
You could slope gopher hills with the right conditions.
Fun to see what you could slope off of, then post it here. Great videos. Very imaginative. Like the couple walking along and looking back to see where the plane is. |
RE: Micro sloping
Same 15 feet duneas the touch and go video. Next videos will all be from this dune line. Its a 0,5 mile long and 15 feet high North eastfaced coastline,2 places is therea drop behind wheremicroDS is possible. Distance from home is 10 miles Alula Scratchbuild 40" Swift (fiberglass fuselage and masive balsa wing and elevator) Cheers S </p> |
RE: Micro sloping
Micro sloping was humorously demonstrated at the Perry, Ga. swap meet some years back.
The guy who did it stood in the middle of the basketball court they were using for indoor demonstrations with a closed cardboard box as the crowd gathered. When he started the demonstration, he opened the box and pulled out a tiny glider about the size of his hand. He showed how it was simply a tiny glider without any form of power. No motor. No prop. When he explained that he was going to fly it around without landing for as long as he chose to fly, giggles and chuckles were heard. So he did. Noone noticed that he kept the box lid in one hand all the while. As he gently 'launched' the little glider, his free hand went to his TX that was hanging from it's neck strap. The hand with the box lid brought the lid up just below and in front of the glider. Instant slope........ As he casually walked about, the box lid provided the slope and his pace provided about 1.5mph worth of lift. Now that was micro sloping for sure. |

Or You canfind a line of trees.
At the RC club we have a line of trees just around 80 feet from the runway, (just over the tailplane of the Fox on the picture.) When the wind is North or S and around 10 to 18knots thentreeline DS is possible here. We tow or bungee the glider to heigh. It takes a real good glider (and pilot) to do it , but its real cool. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...evil_smile.gif And a trailer video. 50 feet DS dune
Wind S. E. and 20 milesfrom home.. This is magic dynamic soaring, not enough wind for sloping, but enough to maintain a DS circle. The glider is my scratchbuild Foka, 170 cm span. RE: Micro sloping
Hey SpeedsterDEN!
Very nice videos! THank you! I enjoyed them all! I have a question though: Why do you fly in the slope's rotor, not the windy side where the most of the lift is? It's a NO-NO place to be for the real gliders (unless you have a death wish). Thanks again for great videos! cheers Mark |

RE: Micro sloping
Longsoar, the backside of the right shaped hill is the funnest place to fly. You can go much faster. :D Do a little search for dynamic soaring. Bigger gliders on big hills are going over 400 mph by flying back there.

ORIGINAL: longsoar Hey SpeedsterDEN! Very nice videos! THank you! I enjoyed them all! I have a question though: Why do you fly in the slope's rotor, not the windy side where the most of the lift is? It's a NO-NO place to be for the real gliders (unless you have a death wish). Thanks again for great videos! cheers Mark When flying at the backside, I dont fly in the rotor. I fly under the rotor and in the lee where there is no wind or turbolent air. if the ridge isnt steep and high enough or sharpenough at the top, then the windjust follow the ridge top and there will be realy turbolent at the holebacksideand itwill be impossibly to fly.And you will lose speed and probberbly the glider, But if there is lee you will gain speed with around half of the windspeed pr. lap, if you fly the perfekt lap. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ades_smile.gif Here I try to DS my Destiny in very light wind for this glider. DS session with Arthobby Thermic 2,5.
Same day and conditions as in the Trinitus video. Low flying and realy good fun, the Thermic was measured with radar to 96 kmh/ 60 Mph, not bad for a light thermal glider without ballast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNz-nQ--T00 Cheers S |

You guys are TOO MUCH! :D It's amazing just how much energy you're getting from even that little lip when it's driven by the sea winds. Especially as you begin to perform the chandelle/wingover maneuvers at each end and then dive back down for a "re-charge".
Any chance you could petition the local civic works department to build the dykes or connecting piers up taller? Just as a safety factor of course. Nothing to do with soaring models at all. Nope, just thinking about those poor houses in behind that need protecting from the storms..... :D |
Yes its impressive what lift a small ridge can produce, when there is a good steady Wind from the sea.
Like this 15 feet dune, and + 20 knots Wind. 1 meter scratchbuild semi Scala Swift S1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4KMqSacHNU They are now starting to expand the harbour, perhaps I could persuade them to make a real tall pier. More old pier sloping videos from the marina. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=576ipQ9Sp90 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P-YTrCRqQA |
