Great Planes Bird of Time ep

12 Attachment(s)
I’m starting this thread on this Bird of Time ep version because I’ve got one, but haven’t had the weather to maiden it yet and I would love to learn anything I can about it. The Bird was perfect right out of the box, and the build went smoothly with minimal snags. One of the only snags I did encounter, which was no big deal, was the fact I had to mount a servo in that little hole in the tail for the elevator. Well, thanks to Ben at RCAirMods that problem went away for only 22$! Most all of his mods for the BOT arf will work on the ep version. The tail linkage mod, that lets you relocate the elevator servo up front under the wing, works flawlessly! Be sure to let him know you have the ep because the braided cable needs to be a little longer and he will ship it extra long for you to cut to length. He is a super nice guy and will help you in any way! I went with all the recommended set up that Tower Hobbies and Great planes recommend. Rimfire 32 800kv motor, Hitec 60amp esc and 3300 to 3600mah 4s LiPo. My receiver is a Spektrum AR6200 w/sat paired with a TM1000 telemetry module and a Spektrum Variometer with built in altimeter. Will also be monitoring LiPo volts and esc temp. I’m controlling the tails surfaces with 2 Hitec HS82mg servos. It balances slightly nose down at 3.75in from LE of wing. I’ll leave a few pics of my progress and would love to hear from others that have this glider. Seen a lot and read a lot on the arf version but not much out there yet on this one...

Those who may not be familiar with this glider, go to Tower Hobbies web site and look up the Great Planes Bird of Time EP. I tried to post a link on it for this thread, but couldn’t because I’m a new member and haven’t posted enough. It’s a new product and is currently back ordered till lat February. I was able to snag one on a preorder of the last shipment. It’s very nice looking!

Around 2005 I had one from memory the only little problem the mate & I had was the spoilers were a little of a tight fit.We fitted dual servos for the flaps. Ours were built from plans so it was rather a large build job.Flights were great you need a good chair, a few bottles to ward off the dry throat and lots of time cause once this bird is up there it can ride the thermals all day long.

Have hun,
Neil

Glad I found this thread...I hope it can be revived...I have been wanting the BoT for decades and I recently was lucky enough to find a NIB EP including ESC and motor for a song! I've flown sailplanes for the duration of my two-plus decades in the hobby but I am what you would call a "PNP" guy by nature. I fly a lot of warbirds and jets from FlightLine and Freewing which come in PNP form so my build ability is pretty basic. So while this may be considered an easy build ARF by many, it will be a bit of a challenge for me.

With that in mind, I am glad you named someone who can help with the mods needed as I have yet to dive into the build (it just arrived yesterday) and really feared dealing with a micro servo install in that little circle in the tail. I too would rather house both servos under the wing. I will search for Ben at RCAirMods for the tail linkage mod...Hope he is still around and can help. In the two years since you started this thread do you have any new thoughts/tips? Thank you!

I can't seem to find any Ben at any RCAirMods...Can someone please provide contact info? Thanks!

I've also recently come into an older BOT. This one was in disarray and I had to do some repairs. the motor is an AX 2820 12. looks like the sail plane converted to electric. I've also worked on a battery tray. So far I can only get the CG to 4" behind the leading edge with a 3s 2600. I'm not going to buy new batteries so these will have to work.

Got the maidened out of the way. The CG was a bit off and had my hands full for a minute or two. Finally got it trimmed out and only using half power for most of the flight.
