is that for wind protection, or if the model gets out of control???

Wow !

I presume the wooden structures are there so you can duck if your elevator fails ?

Is that the glider technique that depends on the wind actually blowing from the other side (over the top) of the hill ?

262 MPH and NO turbine ! You just saved yourself about $3000.

The speed is a result of circling into the rotor created on the leeward sides of slopes like these, on windy days. (not diving)

The winds were 40+ when these records were set. I don't know about you, but if I had a plane performing 30 to 40 G circles right in front of me, at 262 mph, I would want a bit of protection in place. (They may have those "barriers" for another reason, but they're a good idea, regardless.)

I'm not by any means an expert on dynamic soaring. What leads to my interest is how these guys build hollow composite wing structures that can take 40 Gs. (amazing)

I find the safest place to be when the DS speeds get that high is home.
These things disintegrate under the loads, with the parts flying all over the place.
It is NOT something to be done with non-flying spectators in the area.
It's awesome to see a hand-launched, and sometimes hand-retrieved glider get to those enormous speeds with no power other than nature's own and flying skill.

The circuit being flown at the extreme speed is just about 300' in diameter, and takes less than 3 seconds.
It's way beyond my capabilities to control an airplane doing that.

i found a cool site here while I was trying to find good dynamic soaring Ds videos. I'm trying to find good videos that you can hear how fast the sail is going and see it well too.
