New Fleet (needing repairs) UPDATE W/PICS

I just recently came into about 10 planes, 4 of which are gliders. A kind of uncle figure past a few years ago with parkinsons. When I was younger whenever I visited I would ask him how his planes were and we would head to the basement. His hands were to shaky to do any work so he would guide me through how to do things. It was a lot of fun. When he past the planes got passed around throught the kids, until they decided they wouldn't use them. My aunt remembered how I would help him and called and offered me the collection. When I got them I started sorting through broken parts and fuselages. I even found a complete Sophisticated Lady kit that only needs a few pieces. I repaired two planes last night, His first GL and a Wanderer. Now the other 2 are ready to be fixed. One is an Electra which needs minor repairs to the fuselage wood and motor set up. The other is unidentified which I will post pics of tonight.

He had done a repair job on the electra, mounting the motor. It looks Offset, is that normal?? I thought it was supposed to be centered.

Thanks
Zach

Hey Zach, sorry about your uncle.

Not sure what you mean by offset. However most engines are offset in an angular deflection to compensate for torque, as well as additional lift while power is being applied.

My EZ glider elect has a downward deflection of at least 3-4 deg. I have never actually measured it , but it is very noticeable by eye. Even so, I have to use a lot of down elev to compensate while using full power.

I am sure you will get a more precise answer to your ??s as there are a lot ov very talented/knowledeable folks here.

Aloha, Les

Sorry about your uncle. Those are good times to cherish in the basement.

If it's a glider I would leave it straight ahead. Isn't climbing the most important part of gliding? I will probably be corrected on this but it will fly fine and all your thrust will be moving it forward and upward. A little down elevator never hurt no one.

Get em up there........gravity will finish the rest.

Thanks guys. It really was some good times, I learned a lot. I was on the Goldberg site and it has engine offset in degrees. I guess it is supposed to be. I will post pictures of the unknown plane this afternoon.

I also have a bunch of airtronics servos I would like to solder on new Z leads. How do I know which wires match up?

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

White wire is signal and red and black are current.

any ideas on that plane anyone??

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

It looks good for a plane stored for so much time. The wings are great but the fuse is definitely needing repair and reinforcements. Try to use spars and lots of epoxy where needed to provide solid joints and rock-hard sturdiness.

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

haha thanks for the tip alex but i meant what kind is it.

The fuse trim and wing marking look like the ones you would find on a Spirit or a Gentle Ldy. Hve you found any pieces of the nose?
How long is thee wing and how much dihedral does it have?

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

I held my GL wing up to it and they look similar but the tail section is different. I wonder if It is a Spirit. I like the cover job and hope to recreate it on the fuse.

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

The fuse looks like my spirit 2M's and the trim markings are the same but the wing does look different. It might be a different wingset on a Spirit fuse.

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

yes I believe it is. I'm excited to get them all back together. I have his first plane, a gentle lady, all trimmed out from some hand tosses, and a Wanderer that I had to fix some covering on, both ready for the air. I may convert te wanderer back to an un powered glider, I don't want glow fuel all over. Thanks for the help. Maybe tonight I will post more pics of the entire set up

Send us pics of all your new planes! BTW, is that carbon fiber tape or velcro on the fuselage?

Samson4721 07-01-2008 07:42 PM

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

That is velcro, he liked to use it to hold recievers in place and batteries. I'm headed down for pics now. There are some pretty beat up planes.

Well I finally got down to the basement to finish up my pictures, sorry for the wait.

Not exactly sure what kind this is, I think a falcon by carl goldberg

This pic was once I got the radios figured out I took it outside and fired it up. Engine ran great. Even with the old glow plug:D I taxied it around the yard with a whole tank.

This is the other Electra, not really in much better shape than the white and copper one from earlier considering all the epoxy and outdated equipment.

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...1/IMG_0201.jpg

Not really sure what this is, almost like a homemade kind of blueprint scratch build.
http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...1/IMG_0203.jpg

Obviously a tower trainer. The wing however is covered completely different.

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...1/IMG_0211.jpg

This is a Wanderer, I had to do a little patching on the horizontal Stab.
http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...1/IMG_0206.jpg

This is the rack of wings. The only one that is mine originally is the torn up Gentle Lady wing on the bottom that has already seen many repairs.
http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...1/IMG_0209.jpg

His first plane, I had to recover and rebuild the tail feathers. A gentle lady
http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...1/IMG_0212.jpg

I also have a Sophisticated Lady on the build table, he had the whole kit untouched just waiting to put together. I also have another powered plane ready to run, a Swizzler? Needless to say I am very excited. Hopefully I will make more progress this week.

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

Youve got lots of planes needing urgent repairs... BTW, the servos on the Wanderer are kind of twisted sideways... Might be the servo tray. Is that a COX PeeWee on the Wanderer? Lots of wings on that rack....

If I were you I would check if the radio receiver were narrow band double conversion. If not, you could have serious interference problems.

Samson4721 07-07-2008 08:08 PM

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

yeah I checked all the recievers, they are all narrowband dual conversions. I didn't notice how angled they were until you pointed it out, that will bug me enough to fix it probably. I am really excited about getting them back together. The sophisticated lady was a lucky find, I always wanted one and they don't make the kit anymore.

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

Sophisicated Lady is still sold on Tower and is a very good flying sailplane. BTW, now sold as an ARF not kit..

Samson4721 07-09-2008 10:53 AM

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs)

Yeah I don't want an ARF personally, I really like to build them myself. I mean for me that's half the fun. Just need to build the wing and cover. A couple of the leading and trailing edges were damaged though so I have been making my own.

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs) UPDATE W/PICS

You have a lot of rust and garbage, except maybe the electronics. Just throw all of it away and spend $100 on a new plane

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs) UPDATE W/PICS

hahaha a true hobbyist I see. A couple of the planes like the eagle and home built contraption will not be repaired. Fun little projects. I think my next buy will be a Great Planes combat Corsair ARF...they don't make a kit.

The Mustang also looks like a beauty
(THE GP ONE)

RE: New Fleet (needing repairs) UPDATE W/PICS

I agree on that for sure but I don't think I am ready for that type of plane yet. From what I had read with the mustang you have to be on the sticks all the time, because of the flat and high wingloaded wing. Eventually I will have both.
