Dynaflite Butterfly tricycle gear conversion???
Is it possible to convert a Dynaflite Butterfly to a tricycle landing gear?

RE: Dynaflite Butterfly tricycle gear conversion???
This may be about the most forgiving taildragger set-up ever. A good way to learn. But as to your question, yes it can be made into a tricycle, move the mains back and add a training wheel on the front.

Why would you want to add extra weight and extra drag, not too mention extra complexity? If it were me, I'd hand launch that plane and only really use the gear for landing.

I guess it would be to each their own. But why?
The conversion is easy enough to do. But why make it complex for a simple easy to fly model. tink |

Wheels on a Butterfly is kinda like dualies on a Mini Cooper. Perhaps a launch cradle would be the best of both worlds???

RE: Dynaflite Butterfly tricycle gear conversion???
No Wheels, I have 2 Butterflys, one glow, one electric, on the electric I removed the gear entirely and hand launch it. Also reduced weight by using a carbon/fiber wing rod. As anyone who has flown the Butterfly it is a lot more than a "trainer", it is just plain fun. If you haven't gone electric, do it.

RE: Dynaflite Butterfly tricycle gear conversion???
I'm with the others that say just hand launch and belly land. Or if you're flying from a paved or rough gravel field then maybe one belly wheel and some wire tip skids at the dihedral break.
If you're thinking of this because it's hard to taxi in a cross winds then you're practicing with the wrong model. The high amount of dihedral will make models such as the Butterfly nearly impossible to taxi in any sort of wind regardless of using trike gear or conventional. THis is a "carry it out and set it down facing into the wind" sort of model. |
