Hovering question
 

hello all, I just finished setting up my raptor 50 and have took it out the past few days and started learning hovering. The problem im running into is the cyclic control is very slow, not much reponse at all. I have it set up to be slow/less responsive around center stick but if i speed up my rotor rpm this would make it more responsive wouldnt it? Havent had a chance to try it out yet and was just curious. Thanks

If you have EXPO on, that will slow down response. I'm still learning on my Hirobo EVO .50 and have never needed EXPO.

Suggest you find a seasoned pilot at a local club to check out your Raptor there may be several things not quite right you may or may not know about. An experienced pilot can help sort out any issues and test fly your baby for you. That way you can separate mechanical issues from uh, "learning" issues! ;)

The things that effect cyclic response are:

Paddles
Cyclic throw
Expo/dual rates.

How much expo are you running? 25 precent is a good starting point.

What paddles are you running?

How much throw do you have on your cyclics?

I've been noticing my heli feels pretty mushy and kinda unresponsive hovering, I've been feeding out the expo because I think it's just that I don't like the feel of it at all. When talking to one of the local heli pilots at our shop he told me he can't fly helis with expo at all. Might just be that.

But yeah if it's a question that could potentially lead to a crash it's probably best to have someone that really knows helis look at it in person.

Thanks for the reply's, as for paddles i have the black ones. I think they are 28 or 30g, it had green ones on when i bought it but i read that the black ones have slower response and the greens ones are more for 3d or experienced pilots. I got lots of extra parts with it when i bought it so i put everything back stock, to learn on and also in case of a crash. I had the expo set to 30%, i took it down to 25% today and noticed a slight difference. I will decrease it 5% more tomorrow and see what happens, i didnt want to make any extreme changes all at once. The throw i dont know, will check and look into that.

Low engine speed can make it more sluggish.  If  you have it on high rates or low rates can affect it as well.

Set the collective so the blades are 0 and put a pitch gauge on.

Put the blades out straight fore/aft and give full aileron and measure the pitch in both directions.

Turn the blades 90 degrees to the boom (flybar should be aligned with the center of the boom) and measure the elevator throw both ways.

Report back.

Yes, black paddles are slower and more stable than white or green ones.
