Controlaire 5 super regen receiver, home made pulse actuator and home built transmitter on 27 MHz in the 1962/3 time frame. Then an ACL true analog unit with proportional rudder, elevator and positional throttle. Hog heaven! Then built a Digitrio (still have) digital set. Parts cost was $250 (1966 dollars, about $1200 of todays dollars) and initially it was three channel. BTW, there where no ARF's so when one crashed, it may be two/three months before you were back in the air.

Well, enough of poor me! I like the new equipment.

My first radio was the Futaba 8SGAP when I was 13 years onld in 1983. My dad was feeling a bit guilty about the amount of time and money he had spent on my brother for his sports and for the money he spent on my sister for her horse. He made the very big mistake of telling a 13 year old just falling in love with RC airplanes "Son, I'll buy you any radio you want!" Of course, the SGAP was the latest and greatest from Futaba at the time. It even had a hand held tachometer that you plugged into the radio to tach your engines. The total price on that thing was $528.63 delivered. He about chocked when he saw the price, but Mom and Dad came through. I still have it to this day (but don't fly with it). I have to admit that I did use it for my first helicopter in 1997, a Shuttle Z. It amazed me that a 1983 airplane radio would have the ability to mix things up enough to properly fly a collective pitch helicopter years later! That thing is built like a brick with a metal case (plastic end caps). It weights almost twice what my current 8UHP does.

Default Radio

I thought I was the only old geezer on here. I started with a Controlaire reed set back in about '66. Steve.

No, Steve, there are a lot of us old geezers still floating around. I started with a Citizenship escapement rig back in 66 (too poor to afford reeds or that new fangled proportional stuff). I flew pulse rudder, galloping ghost, and reeds after that.. Ain't our new toys wonderful.
