Well, it was fun while it lasted
Due to a stupid mistake today, I crashed my Raptor 30.It looks like I will be forced to leave the hobby as I will be unable to afford the repairs anytime in theforseeable future. I am not trying to make a sob story, but, just want to say thanks to everybody who helped me get started. -Alex</p> |
RE: Well, it was fun while it lasted
Yeah the helicopter hobby is 50% flying and 50% fixing. Seems the natural state of a heli is on the shelf broken waiting for back ordered parts to come in.
Good thing about them is when you replace the parts you have a brand new heli where if you crash a rc plane it will be heaver and weaker and unless your good with refinishing will be blemished where the repairs was made. |
RE: Well, it was fun while it lasted
Yeah, but I am not even sure what happened. I was landing but when it touched the ground it nosed down into the ground and the rotor hit the ground. It was over from there.
Luckily all the parts are available. Unluckily, I can't afford them right now. Or anytime soon. |
RE: Well, it was fun while it lasted
Maybe just get an MCPX and keep the fingers warm with that?
|
RE: Well, it was fun while it lasted
Also have you looked into the cheaper Helis? Here is a .50 size one and the whole kit is only $150 which I'm sure is less than the parts for the crash you just had.

WAIT!! STOP!!!DON'TGO!!!
The Raptor 30 is one of the most common helis around. Lots of people have a Rappy 30 and parts sitting around that they don't use. Come up with a list of what you need and post it here, RR, and HeliFreak. You will be shocked at how many people will donate parts to keep you going. Just pay the shipping, put it back together, and go fly. Give it a shot if you wanna keep flying. The economy sucks right now, but the heli community is comprised of great people. Seriously. |

Hey sigma here is a crash kit http://www.heliproz.com/prodinfo.asp?number=804203, the only thing it doesn't come with is the tail blades I believe. I bought one of these when I crashed my raptor and I was pleasently surprised at the cost and quality. Give thema try. Do you use a trainer? If you don't I would recommend picking one up I am pretty comfortable flying but I still use one right now, which I will be ditching if the weather ever gets consitant and I an get some more practice in this season.

RE: Well, it was fun while it lasted
Thats actually a pretty good deal. Whats the difference between wood and carbon fiber blades?
|
RE: Well, it was fun while it lasted
I believe when learning to hover there is no real big difference, but once you get into more maneuvers they are far mor sturdier and they wont flex as much. Thats the only difference I can tell you, however I have these blades on mine and they are nice.

RE: Well, it was fun while it lasted
Grass would tear the skins off the wood blades on my Blade SR. I got more use out the the carbon fiber blades.

RE: Well, it was fun while it lasted
Well. I feel stupid. After I said that I was leaving helis, I decided I couldn't. I found all the parts that I listed above brand-new for $87 on Tower Hobbies, Ebay and Debbies RC World (never heard of them so I hope they are OK). They will all be here early next week. Back to the simulator!!

Good job!
Careful with places you "or me even" have never heard of. They usually have the cheapest prices and then you have trouble. Quick Tech Hobbies is about the worst for this. There products list is like 10 or 12 years old so the prices are 50% less than any ones. You buy the part, come to find out it's back ordered "actually the company hasn't made that item in 8 years and is never going too!" Then you get a charge on your credit card marked as "consulting fees". Lets see I want one of those Robart transmitter tray that Robart stopped making ten years ago. Lets google it and see if any one still has one in stock. Oh JOY! Quick Tech Hobbies has then in stock. Yeah right that's the last you'll see of your $24.95 plus shipping. Best to do a search here and read the reviews. You have to study through the replies because some people wine unnecessarily, "This company sucks! I ordered a part for my helicopter from them and it took three weeks to get here from china, THREE WEEKS! I wanted my part NOW!" I'm going to look into this Debbies RC World for ya. |
RE: Well, it was fun while it lasted
Looks like Debbies RC World has a good rep among the car folks here on RCU, you should be OK.

RE: Well, it was fun while it lasted
Also, I bought the blades from te link below. I keep reading something about epoxying the blades. What are they talking about? Is there more to installing new blades than just unscrewing the old ones and screwing in the new ones?
EDIT: Sorry forgot the link: http://www.drcwonline.com/browse.cfm...0/4,40401.html Also, some guy wants to trade me a RtF Raptor 30 V2 for my Xbox 360 + 24 games so I could possibly have 2 Raptors here pretty soon. Although, I think that I would have more use out ofa different RC heli or another RC car than 2 of the exact same helicopters. |

If you are looking for some decent blades, Heldirect has 550mm FRP blades for under $20. I use them on my Gaui Hurricane 550 and they work pretty well, although they are a little bit heavy.

Well, I wish I had seen those. Oh well I'll get those the next time I crash http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ssed_smile.gif.

Nice!
Good Job, glad you stayed with it. Funny how things calm down a few days after a crash and aren't as bad as you thought they where. |
