Newbie needs help
I got a Raptor 30 a little while ago and I'm trying to get it in the air. Everytime I try to get it to take off, it spins out of control. The part that confuses me is that it doesn't always spin in the same direction. Sometimes it will spin right, and I need to give it left rudder to be steady. Then after I set it down and try again, it will spin to the left. Trimming it does not work because the settings seem to "stick" from one flight to another... ie if I give it left rudder, it seems to stick partly to the left even after I center it. The servo is not binding.
I have a Hitec Eclipse 7 with Ikarus Profi gyro. Another question I have relates to the engine. I have it set up to run rich because I'm breaking it in. When I run it, not much smoke comes out, but a lot of liquid oil sprays all over the place and drips on the skid. Am I right in thinking that it's too rich, making it not run hot enough to burn the oil? Thanks for you help. |

HI, as fairly new heli flier myself,I do know that you need your engine producing a lot of smoke to ensure proper cooling, provided you are using castor oil based fuel,as for your uncontrolled spinning,I would check and see for sure that your gyro is working and set in the proper direction, also sometimes if your engine is not running right and is missing it will affect you how your heli will dance around. If you are in a RICH 2 stroke it should be in the ball park, just my thoughts on your problem and what i would look at

The engine isn't running hot at all. I'm thinking that it's not smoking due to too much cooling. There is plenty of lubrication splattering out of the muffler, and after a run I can touch the muffler. It's a bit hot, but not hot enough to burn my fingers.
I think if I ran it a bit leaner and hotter, that oil would be coming out as smoke instead of green liquid. The engine idles and runs very smooth. As for the gyro, I tried reversing that channel and it doesn't seem to make much difference. Thanks for your reply. |
RE: Newbie needs help
Try reversing the Gyro itself.

RE: Newbie needs help
How do I do that? Do I do that on the radio, or on the gyro itself?
Edit- I think I see the switch you're talking about on the gyro. I'll try that when I get home. |
RE: Newbie needs help
Regarding the engine. You are running a 2-cycle engine, where the oil is mixed in the
fuel. No matter what the fuel mixture setting is, you will get oil spray out of the exhaust. If it bothers you to get oil on the landing skid, then get an exhaust diverter to point the exhaust away from the heli. However, when you are hovering, you will of necessity be lingering in your own exhaust cloud, which will get oil on your heli. |
RE: Newbie needs help
Spaceman spiff meant that you have to turn the gyro itsself upside down and stick it back onto your heli.

ORIGINAL: wisdom-seeker Regarding the engine. You are running a 2-cycle engine, where the oil is mixed in the fuel. No matter what the fuel mixture setting is, you will get oil spray out of the exhaust. I guess my main question is that the engine is running TOO rich and TOO cold, because not much smoke comes out at all. It just drips loads of liquid oil and splatters it all over the place. Whereas every other 2 stroke engine I've ever seen has lots of smoke from *burning* the oil, mine doesn't seem burn it, I'm presuming because my combustion temperatures are not hot enough to burn the oil. Therefore it is still green liquid when it comes out, as opposed to smoke. |
RE: Newbie needs help
1.What kind of Gyro do you use? Make sure the Gyro is head lock or not? The problem is on Gyro setting!
2.Your engine is too rich. Right turn 15 degree of the vice-fuel needle of the engine! You can also try to close the main fuel needle. |
RE: Newbie needs help
I have an Ikarus Profi gyro. It does have heading hold.
Thanks for the advice on the engine, I'll try that out. |

RE: Newbie needs help
Check the Gyro plug in the right hole of the reciever!:D
