Do helis make planes boring?
I have been flying for 30 years. I've always longed for helis but my airplane skills were always average so I never ventured in until about 2 years ago. Slowly but surely, my heli skills have improved and I'm better flying rotors than fixed wings. Now I find myself selling all my airplane stuff! I've lost much of my interest in airplanes. Without waxing nostalgic, I was wondering if others had the same experience (heli killed the airplane passion....)??

RE: Do helis make planes boring?
Same here, I started flying helis a year ago. Except for training students, i have only flown planks one day. So far i have sold off 4 planes, and some of the extra parts and gear. We are having a swapmeet next month. I'll be selling off a couple more planks and engines. I suspect at some point i will want to fly planks again, so i am hanging on to my combat and fun fly planes.

RE: Do helis make planes boring?
I started out in the hobby with helicopters, the guys at the club could not believe I had no planes, one of the members gave me a cub all most built. I finished this plane and have had a lot of fun with it, I gave this guy my old Venture, now there is a half dozen heli guys where there was none. This club did not like the heli pilots (one bad apple) and did not allow them at there field. Sure have made a lot of good friends the past year. The helicopters are most fun but there is just something about this cub when it flys by, must be caus I dont have to think about it.

Once you bet to bangging sticks 3D helos got boring to me. There are so many different types of planes that they don't get boring, at least to me....

RE: Do helis make planes boring?
Hasn't been the case for me. I started flying fixed wing in 1984, heli's in 1988. I still fly both. Sometimes I think I get the same kick out of flying my park flyers as I do my heli's. The park flyers I have are very relaxing to fly so they compliment the heli's which can be a real nerve trip.
R Rocks mentioned heli's not being allowed at the club field. That has not been the case for me. I have a good relationship with my flying buddies (only one other chopper pilot out of 100 or so members). I have talked to other pilots who ran into this though. One guy from Milwaukee who was up at our swap meet recently told me a club he belonged ran into the problem. They ended up banning heli's because of a couple of trouble makers. |
RE: Do helis make planes boring?
I started on planes, but got into helis shortly after. I still fly both and haven't lost any interest in planes. There are so many ways to challenge yourself with both types that I doubt I'll settle on just one (at least not any time soon).
