Starter for YS80 help !

I can not seem to be able to start my YS80 on my X-cell SE.. I am using the high torque Sullivan starter, and it does not have enough pull, even on a brand new, fully charged 12v battery ...

what are you guys using for starting the 80s ?? should I be getting one of these $120 geared starters ?

please help !

No you dont need one of those expensive starters, look no more here is the ticket. You want a magnum starter with torque drive, it cost a whopping $30.00, it starts up my YS 80 with no problem, hasnt bogged it yet, even if my 12volt is not fully charged it just turns the crap out of it. Daz...

You can forget Home Depot, you wont be sorry with your purchase. After you get it and see how strong it is please post how much you like it so others can benefit from this starter on the bigger engines. Not alot of people are aware how strong magnum starters are. Cya, daz...

You ordered the one I had on the link, right?
The other day my freind used it on his YS120 pattern plane, and it turned that thing over like it was a .049

Cool, also just to let you know I started using this starter when my engine was brand new, which is the tightest the engine will ever be, and even when the engine was new, the magnum had no problem.I started up my OS 160fx with it the other day, and this engine would never start with my sullivan, sometimes start with my Kavan starter if 12 volt was fully charged, manum to the rescue, again started it without hesitation.

Whenever I'm at the feild now and someone has a problem spinning their engine, I cant wait to run and get mine and crank that puppy over for them, I almost fell one time running too fast to go get mine :D .

And I'm no Rep. JUST A HAPPY CUSTOMER!!!

I actually burned out my Sulivan !! nice for planes but not the YS80 on my X-cell ... what I also have that could use a good starter is a Henseleit Rocket, that has a OS 1.40 in it ...

I will post my results when I use the starter .. I figure i should have it in the mail on Tuesday ...
thanx for the advice !

You just need to step up the voltage. My Hobbico Torquemaster 90 will turn my .80 over with authority. The key is 14.4 volts.
Here is a pic.

You dont need to step up volts with the Magnum, you can actually be low on your 12 volt pack, and it'll spin it with plenty left over, and its more compact to boot than those big bulky starters. Daz...

If the Magnum doesn't work, you could get the Dynatron. On 24 volts it will spin my 2 c.i. plank motor like it is a 40.

I'm using the Sullivan 24v starter with 2 - 6 cell electric car batteries hooked up in series and tie wrapped to the starter. This works very well but does require rather frequent charging. Others I've seen use 2 - 7 cell electric car packs with much better times between charges.

The Dynatron is not the yellow sullivan starter. Its about 1-1/2 times the size and is ALOT more powerful.

Isnt that Dynatron like $90.00?, and runs on 24 volts?, and huge at that.

Wiwanczyk, should have that Magnum soon, so you guys stay tuned for his personal experience, and then you can leave all that heavy stuff at home, and sport the Magnum.

Only $69, it is 1-1/2 the size of a regular starter and runs off 12/24v. The starter has a torque wind so @12v it will start a more stubborn engine than a regular starter, and on 24v it could start a Harley. :D I think it is actually rated to start up to a 2.1ci engine- no other starter in its class is rated that high.

Most of the time I can start my OS 91 on 12v but sometimes I use 24 if the engine is a little stubborn.

I'm sure that magnum starter is the one that Jason Krause uses. I saw him with it at the Cascade heli fly recently. He didn't know what brand it was but the picture looks identical. So now you can say you and Jason are in the same league as far as starters go!!!!! :D

That dunatron is exactly the same thing as my sullivan !! It burned out on me, and got so hot it was burning my hand !

I got the Magnum today... I open the box .. and %#$%@ !!! its so small !! ... atatched my xcell cone adapter and hit the back yard .... woo hoo !!! this thing spun my ys80 up like a bat out of hell !!

All I have to say is that I just ordered another one ! I will use it for my plank engines (I have a YS100 4 stroke, and a os 1.40 that this thing turned over easily ! )

Dazler, great advice on the starter ! thanx ! the sullivan was the third started i had and still was not good enough .. the Magnum is cheaply priced too, i like this thing .. I guess time will tell its durability, but with this price, i dont care if i even have to buy a new on every 12 months .. (it does look very solid though ! )

What did I tell you!! I knew you would like it, your welcome. Plus its size is great for Heli's, fits right in the palm of your hand. Now when your at the field, wait till someone has a problem turning their engine over, and zap it with that Magnum, and see the power.

Now the rest of you guys that needs a good starter, thats 2 out of 2 happy customers, and like wiwanczyk said you cannot beat the price. Enjoy, Daz...

Furyflyer2, good choice, again you will be happy with the starter. I noticed one thing about athe YS engine is to make sure after every flight you cut off the fuel supply to the carb with a fuel cut off tab. Because with YS, it can get flooded real easy after every flight if you allow that pressure to keep pushing fuel in that carb. Daz...

here is another tip on starting up new angines that are tight ...

loosen the glow plug and start the engine with it 1 - 1.5 turns out .. the moment the engine starts, bring it to an idle, and tighten the plug ... after a tank or 2 on a new engine this becomes unnecessary .. some gassoline engines actually have valves on them that allow the engine to start on a lot lowwer compression, and when the run up, the valves are closed for more power ..

that Magnum starter is great ! I started a brand new OS .91 DF engine with it today !!
