Pull Start engine advantage

I saw a pull start engine on a Venture the other day and it seemed like a good idea. Why do i want to lug around a starter, starter hex and battery? That's probably 15 pounds of dead weight i can leave at home. The only disadvantage i can see is you have to pull start it. And i guess it can be a real pain in the buttocks if you cant get it to start (especially when it's cold or been sitting there a few weeks at a time.

So what do you think? Should my next heli be a pull start or is there something i dont know about it. Is it a high maintenance engine? Bascially i guess i wanna know what the pros and cons are. Thanks.

Remember that the pull-start mechanism is just dead weight once the engine has started. Your heli will have to carry this dead weight all of the time. As for the engines themselves, I have no direct experience, but I have heard that the seal between the starting mechanism and the motor tends to leak after a while.

RE: Pull Start engine advantage

a guy wanted to sell me a 30 size pull start engine. I went home and tried to do some research on the pull start engine. I think there's 4 posts that acutally mention pull start but not enough info to make a determination of it's advantage/disadvantage. Then I did a search on someone that might sell pull start engines..The only ones i could find are for R/C cars.

I've determined if i buy this heli/engine, i'll be all alone with no support. So i dropped it and will stick with my OS 50.

If I remember right, Mike Mas on [link=http://www.rotory.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?Cat=]Rotory.com[/link] did a reveiw on the pull start. You might want to go over there to the forums and ask some questions.

Electric start is so much better than pull start. I've had pull start enegines. They're not fun! The first time you have a hard to start engine you'll wish it wasn't pull start! This is the reason you don't see pull start engines or helicopters which had the pull start mechanism on them with the exception of gassers.
