Forward thrust
Planning to build a airwolf fuse with a custom retract. Can anybody tell me how can I get a forward thrust so I can drive the heli around while in ground?

RE: Forward thrust
In the full size world the cyclic is pushed forward to tilt the rotor disk forward and just enough collective is brought in to taxii. The rotor of models generally isn't free to teeter because of the rubber bushings which try to hold it square to the drive shaft. But even so, you can get some amount of disk tilt. I'm pessimistic about getting enough tilt on a model. Softer bushings will allow more tilt. If you can't get it to taxii as is you might try the softest rubber you can get. The flight response may be less than desired but it might taxii on a smooth flat surface. But because of the limited tilt angle I'm thinking the model will be on the hairy edge of lifting off if it taxis at all, so be very alert cuz it may come off the ground with a full load of forward cyclic and that could be exciting.

RE: Forward thrust
I think everything will be on an individual basis here, try it out and see what you can come up with. Maybe rig up some training gear to prevent a tipover while you test this out. It definitely can be done though, there is a video on youtube of some heli with an airwolf kit that performs rolling takeoffs/landings and seems to taxi without much problem at all.

Thanks for the tip guys. :):D

RE: Forward thrust
The Airwolf from the TV show had jet enjines on the side for forward thrust. I assume you want to replecate that? Depending on the size of the helo you could use EDF, electric ducted fans....

RE: Forward thrust
Now THAT would be cool!

RE: Forward thrust
I wonder if you could put a duct on a turbine heli to shift some of that power to thrust?
Maybe you could set up some bottle rockets to push it? |
