Right or Wrong?... Tip for Heli learner
 

Howdie Folks,

I am in the early learning stages of flying my helicopter (Raptor 30) I can hover pretty much stationary and move around (tail in) both left and right.

I was out this evening getting some practice in, but i was faced with the following situation... Wind coming from the west.. sun dropping in the west! Ok, for the first 20 mins or so it wasnt too bad as the sun was not totally in my eyes, and i could fly slightly off the wind direction, but as the sun dropped further i thought it wise not to fly... So i decided how about a couple of short hovers with the wind behind me? Now the wind wasnt too strong or that gusty, so i tried it and found it wasnt too bad.

What i am after knowing... Am i getting into a bad habit early on in my flying? This is the kind of thing i want to avoid untill i am more confident.

Windy days are great because the plank guys are sitting at home in the basement. So I have the whole field to myself. I don't pay attention to the wind unless it is above 25 mph. My gasser is real stable on windy days the 30 is a hand full.

Yup!

The wind will keep you on your toes, I hated it when I was learning, too much to keep in mind as it is, but itll just make you better, make sure the wind doesnt blow it nose in on you until your ready!

Thanks for the advice guys, Its a big learning process! Ill stick to nose in the wind till i am more proficeint!

New to Helicopters
 

Ive only just started flying helis (raptor 30) and have now done 3 tanks full in total since building it about a week ago, so my hovering is really bad but i am getting better.. and feeling more confident every go!
So far wind hasnt dropped below 10mph and and gusts about 15mph but i am getting used to it but it does give you a rush when it suddenly decides to go up 20ft cose of a gust.. but so far i havnt panicked and have just notched down a few clicks and down she comes nice and gental... Infact my instructor get more panicky than me... but so far hes only grabbed the control once :o)
But what does bother me is the way tail weather-vains (so next purchase will be a HH gyro..

Weather forecast for tomorrow is 5mph so will be a real treat for me.

When my heli was flt tested, the guy in the shop (who also coaches me) set the gyro, when i first started to fly it, the tail was wagging like a dog! He did a few tweaks to the gyro and the Tranmitter and now its sweet as a nut.

like fitenfyr said.. you dont need the HH gyro just yet.... hell for a while i was flying without one (it broke and was waiting for replacement) and now at only a month and a half into flying i can control the tail VERY well (i had someone ask me if I had a HH gyro as the tail stayed were i had it even in wind gusts) (and no i dont have a HH on it :) )

if you keep challenging yourself and stay right at the edge of your "comfort zone" then you will learn faster... but you have to KNOW what your limitations are and dont ever step over them... or else you will get really good at repairs :p
