When to use full throttle
 

I have a question regarding full throttle on the engine. I know in hover it is not needed. But more or less in the higher pitch areas.

Do you set up full throttle before the blades meet max pitch? I was wondering because if WOT is at max pitch it does not seem it would ever get max power since the blades was loaded up way before. Do you set up WOT a little before max pitch? Or do you never use WOT settings?

Reason I am asking is because on my Raptor I am having a hard time keeping head speed up. It bogs down when exiting rolls or loops sometimes.

I am totally new at doing aerobatics with my Heli so this is all new to me. There are only 2 of us at our field with Helis so don't have much help.

I have not set up my pitch yet for 3D because mostly no Idea how to do anything. The most negative pitch I have is -2 degree and thats about it.

I guess I need to just do it and get up high and see what happens. I seen some very basic looking maneuver's but no clue how they done. Like just going in a circle with nose high tail at ground and rotating in a circle.

How much postive pitch do you have? Your engine should really bog down like that unless you're throwing way too much pitch at it.

look at the marks on the frame, the heli should hit +10 at the top mark, -10 at the bottom mark, 0 at the middle and +5.5 at the top quartile marking...

Once you have that mechanically, then set your pitch curve as a straight line for from -10 to +10 and the thorttle curve as a V shape in idle up 2....

This will give full throttle at both maximum pitch deflections and give you reasonable headspeed at all pitch settings, you may need to fiddle with the throttle curve to get it spot on...

I think +10 degrees is too much pitch.I am running a Raptor 30 V2 with TT 39 with + 9 on top and - 9 on bottom and it does all the 3d that my Fury does ,well almost . Also you may be putting too much cyclic in and stalling your blades during your loops and rolls. Try not putting in so much and see what happens. Tim

Don't trust those marks, I've yet to set up one that was correct out of the box.

if it bogs, add throttle, out of throttle and it still bogs down, reduce pitch. :cool:

Raptor 30 with TT.36 and OS6b carb and Wesson pipe.

Max pitch ~9 degrees with stock blades, 9.5 with MS blades. :thumbup:

The blades I am using are the glass blades 550 symetrical. Forget make but were about $28.00

So about 9 degree positive and negative is about right?

you are correct, but you have to set the pitch to match thos settings on the frame to get the correct collective travel...

Well you dont have to, but it works best that way and always gives you a good reference to work from when setting curves on an unflown model....

Currently building 2-3 raptors a week for a shop and it seems to work well like that, they pretty much fly perfect first time...

Depends on several things including elevation and heat, nitro content and pipe tuning. For example, the OS6b carb and pipe combination on my TT36 definitely adds power (while drinking way more fuel).

Unless you're flying aerobatics, you don't want -9 degrees or you're one twitch from a boom strike!

In normal (hover) mode I fly -4 to +9 but I set up my students with -2 to prevent them from slammling the heli down but giving them enough to conquer the gusty wind 'zoom'. When they start looping & rolling, I drop negative to -6. -9 comes in when you want to climb away inverted (panic out when learning inverted:eek: ).

Idle 1 & 2 I set to +/-9 with zero at center stick. For my students entering forward flight, I set all modes to +9/-4 and bump their head speed while adding throttle below hover in both idle 1 & 2 (they often click through accidentally).

I am running the TT 39 with a stock pipe and 20 % nitro. I am not sure what that compares to the 36 with that carb set up but just looking for ballpark.

I guess I will try +9 and -6 at first. I need to work my my rolls some and get used to having it upside down. Then guess try out +9.

I would like to learn to 3D but really don't have anyone to show me ways of going bout it. I was just going to set it up and flip sticks and see what it does. And keep doing it over and over. Then try something different and do that over and over.

I am just so dang excited that this thing can actually do things. I went from a Nexus to this. So you can imagine how much fun it is to finally have a beast that can do things. Now seems I have been neglecting my planes again and getting back into this again.

Wife asked me why don't I sell my planes since I am into helis again. :rolleyes: I told her it Just don't work like that. They have no clue do they. :D

I too went from a Nexus to the Raptor... like moving from a Cub to a Kaos, I know what you mean.

My wife isn't suggesting I sell my planes, I think she hopes I'll revet to planes only... they cost less to maintain. :eek:
