I have a J.R. venture with an O.S. 32. It is very weak in climb, I know it is a 30 size but still its weak. I have heard a lot about the Thunder Tiger 36. Is it worth the money spent to upgrade or would it be better to go to a 40 size or so? Would the 40 size be to torquey for the 30?

If your going to buy a new 30 size motor I would go with the TT39 not the 36(I don't think they make the 36 anymore anyway). The 39 will have all the power you will need for a 30 size heli( from what I heard and read). I have a OS 32 and I know what you mine, it dozen't have the power I would like it to have(but it works good). Have you tryed 30% fuel? I don't use it becouse it cost to much, but I would like to. I have read that it helps the 32 alot (more power).

Eracer_21, your OS 32 should have enough power to climb easily. I think it's not the kind of engine you use that's limiting the power. I think you should check some things before you change : didn't you set it too rich?, if you use a fuel filter, is it clean ? Is your power curve set right ?, is your fuel supply OK?, if you assembled it yourself, are the main and tail rotor running smootly?. I use an OS 32 in my Sceadu and even with heavy 570 mm FRP blades, it has enough power to climb reasonably fast. I use 13 % nitro but it will go with 10 % too.You can loose a lot of power when there is some friction in the main and tail rotor !

Louis B's answer is perfect! But please pay more attention on your rotor pitch curve setting. Try to adjust your throt curve and rotor pitch curve make your engine and rotor goes faster. I hope it works.
And if you want to change a engine 40 and 50 both Ok, but this need a little bit ajustment on your heli to fix the engine. And I believe the 50 engine can use longer with a 30 body beacause it takes low pressure compared with the 32 engine. |

I am on 15% and dont care to use 30% for price and the extra smoke and dirt. The head turns very freely so does the tail. Head speed is about 1680 all through out the pitch range. blades are in track, fuel filter is clean, leaned out, etc. it just doesnt have the power to pull much pitch. Havent measured it lately but I set it at 9 to start and then had to go way down when I went to tuning. Pitch curve is almost flat from hover to full climb. Throttle is about 55% or so at hover and 100% at full climb. Just looking for suggestions. |

Take your head speed up to about 1850 or 1900 in idle up, you will see a big difference. That's where I run mine with no problems. 1650 is good for flying around, but you want a higher head speed for 3D.

If you choose to buy a new engine for the venture, consider the 50 size, but be aware that you should get the heli conversion kit ~$80

I am a huge fan of Irvine airplane engines. Haven't tried the irvine heli but i hear they make a quality 39 heli motor that is worth a look.
I tried the OS 50 Raptor a couple weeks ago. Very sweet. lots of power, easy to tune. very littel fussing to get the power you need without overheating. The down side is it drinks fuel like crazy. charlie is right about head speed, these engines are happy running a littel faster that the 1500-1600 everyone recomends. might be a good idea to upgrade to carbon or glass blades to take the extra RPM, added benefit, they are more efficient than the woodies. |

glass fiber blades are safer than wood. I'v heard somebody's woods blades shoot out in the air

I spin the ***** out of my woodies and have never had a problem, just make sure you glue the plastic onto the wood on the blades(not sure what you call the plastic things). |

World models makes some fiberglass 550's for 28$. They aren't the same quality as the more expensive brands, but they fly great. No more wood blades for me.

Venture 30 to 50
I have a Venture50. I dont think your problem is in the motor unless you have a compression problem. The 32 flies the venture with a good climbout. I on the other hand went to the OS50. It really makes the venture fly. I have a long boom conversion on it so it can run 600mm blades, using TT carbons right now. The one problem with the 50 is the throttle curve. It will take awhile to get it set, to much power have to calm it down alot. I used a GV1 to solve that problem.

Thanks for the info again. I am using the Carbon fiber blades. Seemed like performance went down with them. Same length and all. Had to do some major adjusting on the curves. of course the pitch on the blades wasnt the same. The big advantage i found with my glass over woods is they stay in track. The wood would work out of track once in a while. also had the covering come off of about 2 inches of the tip of one blade while flying. That was a little scarry, shaking, making all kinds of wierd noises, and falling like a brick. Thought about taking the head shim out of the engine to up compression some but with the 95-100 degree days and 70%+ humidity in MS, I am a little scared to.
