Hey Disco, I have the orange/red scheme & plan on painting it. Can a paint in the mould arf be stripped (using a paint stripper like citristrip), or do you plan on wet sanding, then priming/painting?

Dave W. I just picked up a UP-6 brake valve. While researching brake valves, your name came up a few times with the UP-6. Curious what servo you've had success controling it with? I had a JR351 on my Behotec, so now that I've switched to elec gear, the 351 is freed up.. Is that marginal?

I didn't apply any chemicals to peel of the paint, instead I used a DA sander with 300 grit paper to sand the whole plane down. I wanted to cover up the seems and other things I didn't like on the Ultra Lightning (I bought the yellow/red from dubd). After this I applied automotive primer, then re-sanded it with 800 gritt

After this I applied a white base coat, and now I'm applying a white perl coat, this plane will have new metalic blue/white/silver paint job, BLING BLING.

Also in regards to your UP-6 question, the only thing I can say for sure is use a JUICY high torque metal servo, don't use a small servo that would use on a UP-2/UP-3 valve, the brake needs more power. I'm use HS-5645MG on the UP-6 on a plane I used to have (it was a warbird with brakes).

Since then I have switced to the air power electronic 1 way brake valve it works good and is electronic so you don't need to fool with a servo, sells for $70.00 from dreamworks.

You can't paint strip a painted in the mould aeroplane, DA sanding is the only way. I'd still be interested how much weight this additional painting adds...Painting in the mould is super light!
Yes, I love the UP6, the best brake valve if you have a model with enough tyre grip to actually benefit...like a 5" wheel
I use the Behotec on off valve and set the pressure to not lock the wheel, works perfectly the way I use brakes.
To answer, the DS 351? or NES? I'd say you need 80oz min

That looks like a lot of work! I wasn't a fan of the yellow/red either. Glad you're making it look better.

Well the other option was to buy one from CARF, and they want the same price for white as they do a color scheme and its $100/color for a color swap if thats the route. Still even if you do a color swap you are left with a nice ugly seam from head to do and It drove me nuts. New painted is going to look good with all the horns, painted to match, I will gain about 1-2 lbs in the process.

will do the same with the UF after putting on some test flights.[8D]

I bought the green/blue/white Ultra Flash. I could not see it at all so I carefully taped off the green and shot it red. It is much better now. I didn't sand down the green, i scuffed it well with gray scotch brite. It would get the paint all the way to the tape edge without damaging the tape.

Tony,
I too have the green/white/blue. Can you tell me what brand/color of paint you used on your UF?
Regards,
Gus

Hi Gus,

Did you come down at all this winter? I used PPG Concept, which is a single stage paint. I didn't want to clear the entire jet and with Concept the clear is in the paint.

Guys, as I said before all the UF kits I've had in the last few months have painted seems on the top side. This is a Custom scheme, but the stock ones too and the last Hawk I had also.

Thanks guys! lots of good info on this thread! I've now read all 102 pages & 2537post..lol "know your opponent as well as you know yourself & you need not worry a thousand battles"- Sun Tzu.., Well Im pretty familiar with the UF. Maybe I'll do a recap with all the notes I've taken. Some videos no longer work (not sure why), but there are some real winners to study this planes habbits like Dave's landing technique: page 81 post 2012/13 (which I think works for almost every fixedwing aircraft ever made), & the infamous possible tip stall on landing: page80 post 1981(who knows, the pilot said he was still caring most of his fuel, & it looked hot with light, possibly variable winds, so he could have even caught a slight tailwind on short final. looked like a stall to me though).. either way, great stuff here, & a good time to come on board the Flash train.
PPG Concept Single Stage Paint... Gotta get me some of that!

Thanks Disco. I just switched the UP-6 in my Dreamworks cart to the Airpower unit. Trying to load up my cart so I can pick it up at FJ this weekend & save on shipping. UP-6 sounds really cool, but I'm running out of space on my electronic decks anyway. Here's a pic of it coming along. I'm doing it in foam until I figure it all out, then I'll cut the imitation Carbon plastic, & back it with 3/32 ply for reinforcement.
FYI, the rocket is an Estes V2, I think its 22.5" long & 2.6" diameter. When I finish this trip I'll check my Bandit droptanks, I think the measurements sound about the same as those. It looks like without the fins it could make for nice $20 drop tanks, incase anyone wants to give it a try so I can see if I like it on a UF

My green one had the seem removed and painted on top. But they didn't do the vertical stab.

Personally the seem never bothered me, Sports Jet and I don't notice even my UF one, which is not great.
To do the fin and stripes, they get to the point of painting outside the mould...heavier!

I'll pop a canopy glass in the custom scheme and try and get it together today. They never look good without and I need to start the build anyway.

That's almost impossible to believe. If I'd finished my just a little sooner there would have been at least one!

Speaking of which, I'm just finishing up an CF to UF conversion and would like to know what battery combo works best - balance wise for the Ultra.

Hi

Again, people can't help without a little more info! Li-Po, Li-Fe, NiMH? What is your prefered set up. What switch will you use?
The install will affect this as the std ply trays we designed may weight more than a flat plate with everything sitting on top! Cockpit, no cockpit...Pilot?
Generally the UF needs at least 575 grams (20oz) of batteries in the side pockets to balance with the stcok set up and no cockpit/pilot. But turbine weight, tail servo weight all affect this.

You are absolutely correct, Dave! I shoulda provided a bunch more info -

My Flash is equipped with a Powerbox sensor switch and I'm running a JC Titan SE. My preference has been 7.4v lipos. I painted my stock radio compartment flat gray (like I've seen you do) and I'm not using a pilot etc.

Sounds like the 20oz figure might be right for me.

Thanks for the info -

Great, I have a single 2s Li-Po 5200 ECU pack and two 3000 2s Rx packs, total the 20 oz. (you might want a little more as my UF has a small amount of weight in the nose)
Sensor switch is the way to go!
regards

Dave
