Ultra Bandit powerplant????
Guys,
Looks like I could be getting into an Ultra Bandit!!
Now, I have a P160SX and a P200SX. Immediate reaction would be to go for the 200SX BUT I wonder if anyone has experience of a lighter 160SX setup? I know a lot of people think the Ultra Lightning is better with the lighter 160. As similar sized models I wondered if this held true with the Ultra Bandit?
I'm really not bothered about going for 250mph+ if that helps with any feedback....
What do you think?
Cheers
Mark

RE: Ultra Bandit powerplant????
i asked the same question directly to BVM when i purchased mine, they said that if you went with no cockpit and the small tanks that a 160 would be OK, but stick with a 180 or 200. mine has a 200SX.
when the UB was first introduced they has a "small engine" and a "big engine" version. they now simply have the big engine version.

P200 would be good IMO, a JC Mammoth was going to go in it, Ive been really impressed with this engine and that's from a die hide JetCat user.

Hey Mark,
Definately the 200SX. I use the big saddle tanks (2.6 lt each) and they connect directly to the high flow UAT, and the center tank is used for my smoke system.
Cheers,
Darryl

Hey Mark,
In my opinion a "sportjet" needs a big engine!!!!
It makes the airplane much more dynamic in flight.
End speed will never be an issue when going P160 or P200.
Cheers Didier

RE: Ultra Bandit powerplant????
George,
I believe there is a bloody expensive install kit needed that differs between engines?
I think the model I have my eye on is setup for a 200SX already so I'll go that route. Seems to be everyone's opinion too. I can always dial the 200 down at first and then crank it up although it is so unlikely I'll mess around doing that I might as well stick the 200 in and go flat out from day 1

PS: where do you get a decent FOD screen for the 200SX from ? The one I got from JetCat looks like *****....

RE: Ultra Bandit powerplant????
Yes Mark,
The P-180 was in my UB for the first 15 flights or so, then I put in the P-200 Narrow Nozzle (my Skygate Hawk has the P-200SX).
I also retrofitted a P-200SX into Greg's UB.
It's definately the way to go as the 200SX has similar thrust and acceleration to the AMT Olympus HP.
Theese high thrust turbines are very well suited to the UB handling and flight characteristics.
Cheers,
Darryl

I'd also be interested in length of flight time with the P200SX and both the standard fuel system with and without the centre tank being used for fuel.

RE: Ultra Bandit powerplant????
I don't know of an Ultra Bandit with the small fuel system. (Although there must be one or two).
Down here (Southern USA) everyone uses either a P-180 or a P-200 and the large fuel system.

RE: Ultra Bandit powerplant????
Hi,
The Ultra Lightning have the same size but the weight is pretty much different. The Ultra Bandit is much heavier that the UL.
Don`t think more about it put the bigger engine inside the Ultra Bandit...Came on man!! This plane must be the fastest on the airfield!!!
Have fun,
Raúl

Just wondering if feelings have changed? I heard that rob lynch made the 160 look pretty good!
I am setup for 200 with tanks and bypass but could still be swayed to use my 160sx for the light loading...
Is everyone running a fod screen within the bypass/200 setup without any trouble?
I always like to use one.
Thanks
Dave
Has anyone tried a 160 in the 200 bypass and tailpipe setup?
Just curious...

RE: Ultra Bandit powerplant????
Dave,
Rob Lynch is using an evoJet 160 with the large bypass system. If you've seen it fly, you know it was a rocket ship. Most could not tell the difference between the evoJet 160 and the UB's flying with a 200. I'm sure you'll see it in the vertical eventually, but the bottom line is, I don't think you be upset either way. A little less thrust, a lot lighter plane, lower wing loading, lower landing speeds. All around a good move.

Thanks Chad,
I sent Rob a note but have not heard back yet...
Do you know which fuel system he is using? I am inclined to use the two main tanks (5.2L) only and not header if I go to the 160...
Thanks to all who are sharing their ideas here. My only other concern is to check with BVM of course since they seem to suggest the smaller bypass with the 160.

RE: Ultra Bandit powerplant????
Sorry Dave and Andrew,
I didn't see your questions until now and haven't been to RCU for a while.
My UB flies for 10 min on the Large Fuel Cells (2.6 liters each), and the Center Tank is used exclusively for Smoke Oil. If I push the envelope really hard and end up using a High Power setting then I fly for 9 min.
Regards,
Darryl

RE: Ultra Bandit powerplant????
Dave,
I know that Rob much prefers the large bypass system, and credits that with the success of the 160 performing so well in the UB. His plane has the small fuel cells, but you could easily run the large fuel cells and just not fill them. Personally, to do it again, I would just build my UB with the small fuel cells, regardless of which engine. I could easily get over 13 minutes with a 200 and large fuel cells. The lower fuel consumption of the 160 and lighter weight would almost make up for the lost fuel capacity of the larger cells.
Get the big bypass and small fuel cells.....you will like the finished product.
Rob will also be receiving our new evoJet 180 next week. This engine is the same size/weight of our 160, with a larger compressor and more efficient turbine stage pushing 41 pounds of blow. THIS will really be the ticket, taking advantage of the same size/weight savings, fuel economy, and spool up times!

RE: Ultra Bandit powerplant????
i personally saw the switch that rob did on the u b and we thought that the smaller engine evo 160 kept up quite nicely with the larger jet cat previously installed make lighter fly harder
florida jets this u b was definitely a sight to see
evo 160 just a thought
