My flying buddy, Boomerang1, has 2 of these engines and I had one in a Savex L39.
The engine produces about 3.3-3.6kg of thrust from what I can remember and flew the L39 with authority.
My buddy has one powering a bobcat 46 and its a missile, gets very small very quick.
Fuel consumption is good.
I really havn't got any thing bad to say about them, the start sequence is a juggling act until you get the hang of manual start but all in all a good engine.

Oh, that's me!
As Craig mentioned I have 2 of these, I am flying only one at the moment in the Bobcat 46 and he's correct, more than enough power for this 9 pound model & it winds up to scary speeds for a $160 chinese IC conversion! [X(]
Mine both now have the starter mounted on the engine, mainly so I can run a FOD screen plus it's less hassle than poking a starter on a stick down the intake.
Manual starting takes a bit of practice but after a while you get the hang of it. You really must plug in the ground control unit for starting as you have to read RPM & temperature & operate the gas, plug & starter at appropriate times.
The good? The install is very simple & light, tiny ECU battery, no solenoids, little wiring, tiny ECU. As one guy said after the engines running all the starting crap is dead weight & you leave yours on the ground. A litre of fuel comfortably gives about a 7 min flight, no header tank, just a felt or pleated paper clunk. They sound cool, a lot of compressor whine, not just whoosh.
The bad? You have to use your brain to start it as the ECU does little thinking for you. It is a little fiddly but really no more than starting a glow engine. Throttle response on these little engines is pretty slow by modern standards, I reckon about 7 seconds from idle to flat out. If big numbers scare you forget it, at full power these run 190,000 RPM, idle about 55,000.

is the thread for the Nitro Models Babcat 50. Most of the thread is for prop driven models with but there's a few turbine posts there.
The main case is 3 inches in diameter, the front housing overlaps the main case & adds about 1/8 inch. I have not measured a 'Gold' but I would assume it's the same because when I converted my second engine to the on board starter I used the later housing with the built in FOD screen & it bolted straight on. - John.

The one we got here years ago didn´t liked our location altitude even with slow acceleration settings.. Startups where erratic too.
Very loud, or at least the pitch tone was different from the usual turbines we are used to.

Paul, I understand that the gold will give 10# thrust?? Is not your gold outer case about 76 mm?? This green machine will push a jet about 6.7 pounds dry.

All mine are manual start but i use the onboard starter.
My original 44 (pre Gold) was manual start with the starter wand.
Easy to do, no issues.
An original 44 will push a 12lb model round no problem, remember, the original JPX was a similar thrust but weighed about 5lbs!

I didn't have to look long at all. Was checking out a link to FPV flying, stumbled on to home made engines, home made turbines and on to that one.

WellRan my little MW-44 today and all I can say is WoW. John, you are right. I will love this turbine. I missed on the first try because I didn't spin it up enough after the pop. After that, every start was a go. I think I will get me a starter for the front so I can run a Fod screen though. That made me nervous seeing no protection on the front of that thing. Clear the building board. It's Mig-21 building time!!!!! Ha.

Yes, you really have to hang on the starter to get them running, I keep mine engaged to about 40,000 RPM.
Don't forget the idle speed is about 55,000 so you need to get close to that for them to self-sustain. Disconnect the glow driver early as well, you can blow the plug if you keep it energised right through the start up.
FOD screen - oh yes! The parts are all available from the factory & they are very helpfull.
I remember my buddy starting one of these with the starting wand & when he disengaged it the rubber insert fell out & bounced around inside the fuselage with the engine running! [X(]
I've also seen flies sucked into the intake of his engines. No pops, no surges, no puff of flame out the back, the engine just ran normally. A bit disappointing actually! [&o] - John.

ooooH man. It blended that fly up faster than you could blink!!!! Ha. Yea-I know a used front end/motor would never come up for sell here so will be getting a hold of the rep here in a few. I could do a screen right in front of it and manualy attach it after every start BUT> Ha. Ha. The Wt savings would be nice. I left it on the stand and may have to have another go at it tomorrow before packing it back up. I did get better run time with 32 oz. than I Fig I would. Somewhere between 13/16 mins but that was at idle with 8/10 run ups and hold. At idle my temp was from 365/415 C. Full bore was about 510 C. Thanks for all the info and help. Roy
