Default How old are you? (Jet guys only please)

There’s a general notion in the jet community that there is no “new blood” and that we’re an “aging” community. Just wonder if it’s really true or if the new generation of jet ARF’s and second-hand (i.e. more affordable) turbines is attracting younger pilots.

Seems to me you have to be a reasonably experienced r/c pilot to get into jets and that may account for the perception that we are “older”. Plus, I’d also like to know if I am one of the “old farts” people are talking about on other threads.

If this survey has been done before, I apologize…it gets harder to remember when you are old.

34 now, been flying turbines for 11 years. I sure wish the cost of getting into jets 11 years ago was the same as it is now. With the Canadian dollar where it was 11 years ago, a Kangaroo with Spring Air retracts and a RAM750 was pushing $8000!!!!!!
Equivalent jet today with more powerful lighter engines is around $3500! I could have had 2 of them!!!!!!! LOL

I think a better question would be, how many guys who have been flying jets for 10 years or more had to finance their first turbine jet purchase!!!! LOL

Thanks Craig,

You would have to remind me that I'm pushing 50 in a couple of years. And I get to hang out with young bucks like Jeremy who make me feel even older.

Jeremy - how was Steel Panther buddy?

With over 800 new turbine waivers issued in the past 6 years, I would say the segment is growing well.

Total turbine waivers currentls inthe US is right around 1850.

It was around 1000 in 2005.

I've been flying model jets for 8 wonderful years; but, I flew real jets from 1960-90.........they went straight up, made lots of noise.......and also carried real ordinance. I don't mind being called an old timer by the young guys.

Ya, Joe...I understand that the City of Phoenix has asked to borrow your birthday cake to power the municipality for a week.

Well I gues I can say at 59 I've been in R/C for 45 of those years and turbines since 2005. When I had better eyesight I didn't have the funds... Life is funny that way!
