RE: Comp ARF BAe Hawk Build Thread
Awesome, thanks for the tip Bills, I will try that out. A few more pics from some progress. Ian, here are some pics of the cockpit sitting in place roughly. Turns out the nose wheel steering servo will be the easiest thing to fit. The front of the glare shield just needs to be notched and wont be visible at all. The real problem is the rest of the cockpit. Since this cockpit is designed for the FB and SM Hawk which both I believe have flat bottom canopy frames, it sits a little high in this canopy frame since there is an angle towards the front. This causes the cockpit to sit higher and makes a huge gap up front. Its going to need some TLC.
Please excuse the blurry Crackberry pics, new phone coming soon.

Ok, just about done with the installation then I have to just finish up a few details and the cockpit kit. I installed the spring for the front gear door, it works well, simple and straight forward. Also I used a small button head screw to secure the stab carbon pivot rod so it will not slide out.

Dantley, Here are a couple of photos of a Blue Box pilot in the hawk. The size will be OK. I am going to have to set him on a phone book like a grandma on a Cadillac but I think he is a good size. If you go with a bigger Pilot you will need to cut his legs off above the knee or have his legs stick out the cockpit front. I will need to do that even with the Blue Box guys.

Bill, did you ever get your cockpit final mounted? If so can you post some pics? I am trying to mount the cockpit now and am having a tough time coming up with ideas to secure it nicely while still making it look half decent. I would like to mount it in the canopy so it comes out with it when it is removed.

I am sure the 90 Would fly it fine Chris. I have seen one fly with a 120 and it was very fast. If you kept it light and did not add things like smoke and such then I think the performance would still be good.

Pictures of cockpit, the front I chopped off at the same angle as the framework and the plywood edges slide into the framework with small counter sunk screws holding tubs in place .
Any questions just ask!

Yes, it would fly fine with a 90, I thought about sticking a P-80SE in one to show people. I fly my P-120 model at a lot less than full power, I don't even reach or use full power on a scale take-off run.

The model will take it, most of the "crazy" Germans fly with P-160SX's and they fly them like Bandits (one of the guys has a Tutor with Behotec 180) and all are flown like sports models at high speed...look stupid screaming around the sky! I have no issues with a larger turbine, if you use the throttle. Flying "scale" you need loads of power as we don't have the full scale inertia, to fly along at scale speed with this 1:5.5 Hawk we are going quite slow, to power through a big climb you need power...the P-120SX is perfect, but a well used 160 would be OK if the pilot had throttle management.

Ian, Not quite finished with the cockpit yet but close. What I did was add a rail onto the frame for the tubs to rest on. I am at the same height as the tabs in the center of the frame. This puts the cockpits a bit high but they do fit in. I had to trim the corners of the front to get it to go under the lip in the front but that will be easy to hide with some light weight cloth and flat black paint. Can't post photos right now but I will as soon as I can.

Ok, here are some final pictures of the cockpit install in the Hawk. Seems to have worked out pretty well. The pilot fits well and everything looks fairly well in proportion to everything else. The plane is pretty much done, think I am going to fire it up one more time time tonight, check the smoke system and taxi it around and make sure everything is functional.

Not right now Alan but I can snap some here in a couple hours and post them for you. We are running a dual stick setup and I am hoping to test it tonight.

Alan, my rule is I try to get the smoke oil injected to as close to the center of the exhaust as possible. I did not measure so I am not sure of the exact distances, just bend the tubing so that it injects as close to the middle as possible.

Ian
Ok thanks for that, never had smoke fitted before in any of my Jets, have read elsewhere that the diesel burning can cause damage to the pipe? I would emagine that the pipe could end up with carbon etc

As usual, Ian did a great job with the build. I just need to CG the plane and it's ready to fly. Here's a picture of the Hawk on it's way home to hang out with the other birds.
