BVM F-86 Goldenhawks color scheme.
HELP!!!!!!! I have been trying to find a close match of gold paint for my BVM sabre so that i can paint it in the golden hawks color scheme. With very little luck i just can't for the life of me seem to find anything in a PPG DCC or concept paint color to come close to looking right. Any Help would be appreciated.

My son's has the same gold color from a PT Cruiser ('99, I think) It is close, but not exact....
There is a story behind that gold paint, but I can't remember it - I will have to check with my buddy. I believe the original paint is still available, but use for something totally different...I'll check it out...

Thanks wayne, I pretty much no the whole story behind the original color which was actually a gold powder mix into a clear nitrate celulose and the company that they got the powder from is the sheffield bronze corporation. I did buy there gold antique paint but have not been able to get it matched into a ppg color.

The Sabre in your pic is the one on display at Hamilton Ont airport at the Canadian Warplane Museum. Here is a pic from my wedding last yr.

Here is a decal set from Leading edge models. Maybe you can have them enlarged? by a vinyl cutter.

Thanks Grinder, i already have the decals that i had made into paint masks to do the hawk and the roundels, my problem is getting a gold paint to come close to the original color. I'm trying to get it mixed in a PPG Automotive single stage paint.

Hi Greg, I'm doing the BVM Sabre as well.
Mine's a rebuild so I'm doing it light lean & mean with no frills to suit a small engine.
Do you think the wing fences are really needed?
For me they are one more thing to get damaged so I'd like to leave them off. - John.

Thanks Greg, good luck with your build.
Be sure to update your post when finished.
Any mods you felt necessary? I started on the elevator control system with the two push on ball links (yuk!)
John.

My son's is a resurrection as well. It needs a new paint job, but everything is in fine shape. He did a bunch of preventative replacements, such as new fuel tubing, etc. We did an engine start this afternoon...first time it has run for about 5 years.

No i don't, but I will ask the guy that built it...... He will probably fly this one as is for the upcoming season, then strip it down over the next building season (which is pretty long up here!). My father in Law flew Sabres 60-odd years ago, so we are going to repaint as one of the machines that he flew...

Greg I used the same powder as on the full size. It is Canbro PG 103 Bronze powder. Canbro is a division of International Bronze Powders Ltd. It works the best if you paint with aluminum first. I have forgotten the mix ratio as I used it with Hobby Poxy clear. I still have almost a full 1 pound can left from 1977. Eric

Greg,
I recently purchased a BVM Sabre and saw your post. Mine is the older kit version with the single piece wing and still new in box. If you are still looking for paint suggestions read this article.

Keep in mind that Rodney Williams the guy that built that model has won many IPMS modeling competitions and he is comparing the paint he used with a paint chip from the paint that was used on the Golden Hawks. His recommendation is a product called SNJ (now sold by Hawkeye). http://www.hawkeyeshobbies.com/catalog/snj.htm
Unfortunately it's sold in 1oz bottles. I'm not sure how much you would need but probably at least 10 bottles if not more.
