You're absolutely correct RCER88.

You don't have to have a noon time line up or let them roam through the pits. You just need to let them see the planes. You never know whose interest you are going to spark and influence to join this hobby.

Our club events draw so many spectators because of the soccer fields and bring in new people to the hobby because if our politeness and visibility of the planes and they are protected.

Heck there are a lot of times that I can't fly at an event because of my 3 year old so we go just to watch the flying, the planes, meet new people in this great hobby, and support their event/club.

An event isn't successful because the pilots show up. If an entry fee is $10 and you get 20 pilots. You only have $200. That doesn't support the club/event. It's all the food, drinks, raffles, and etc that get bought by the members and spectators.

However, those visiting modelers and spectators aren't going to be around long enough to buy anything if the event doesn't support not only the flyers but the spectators.

When I go to watch I also pay the pilots fee to support the event. The only event I haven't dropped a dime on to support and wouldn't was the JWM.

I have been to many events over the years. been in the hobby twenty plus years. I do not have a turbine waiver. I have planes that fly faster than some jets anyway. I can understand the costs involved etc. So don't bash me for displaying some common sense and insight. It does not matter if it is a $50.00 beater plane or a $100,000.00 jet it is the same. Protect the equipment and yet have the public limited access.

Safety of equipment at events can be easily rectified with some prior planning and dedication. In many events there is just a rope with signs hanging. ''NO SPECTATORS BEYOND THIS POINT'' and ''Do not touch the airplanes'' separating the pits and spectator area. Enforce it.

The host club should have a ''DEMO'' plane that is in a tent manned by people who can answer questions somewhere behind the flight line so people can walk in and touch This will show them the basics. That gets the ''touch'' out their heads. On the flight line I usually leave one airplane apart so the people can see the radio equipment inside from behind the rope. I then answer any and all questions in a polite manner. If I am getting ready to fly and someone asks a question I just say. ''I am going to fly now if you hang around I will gladly answer more questions after I am done. I need to make sure I have this right.'' In most cases people will wait and watch. Your mannerism to the public can be just as important. The nicer you are to them the better and more well behaved they become.

I have even seen a simulator at some events on a laptop let the public actually try it. Humbles them quickly. They then develop new respect for what we do.

At some events they even pick a dozen or so people to fly a trainer on a ''buddy box'' during a lull we have done this and put up two trainers for the public to try. We could control access as we ''Stage'' the people and then rotate them to the flight line with escort.

There are ''MANY'' ways to involve the public and still keep everything safe and still have a good time. It comes from planning and dedication to promote a wonderful hobby.

I dont think you will ever stop people from getting close to your equipment unless you guard it. I have had more problems from registered pilots at events than spectators. I have seen pilots wipe out several plane crashing, and same for helicopters.

Please clarify. Do you mean a pilot wiping out several planes by crashing a single aircraft into several others? Or a pilot crashing one of his planes, then flying/crashing another one of his planes, then flying/crashing another, etc?

Both actually, I am with you guys I dont like people messing with my stuff either, im super picky. That being said I enjoy people asking me questions and admiring my hard work on a model. Enjoy flying, be safe while doing it and educate as much along the way as I can and that's all you can really control. I have been in both types of clubs, some like getting new members and having events for everyone and others that run it like a secret society. I dont like the secret society, but there are some that do so when it comes to non-specific club event like KY jets that has people from both types and everyone else, there will always be unhappy people no matter how much you try. So all you can do is plan the event and set the rules, what can happen will happen.

Keep em out!!! I have been to many shows where the crowd is allowed to get very close or in to the pit area. Lots of sticky fingers and individuals not paying attention. Noon time line ups and half time shows are a waste of time as well. Nobody I know goes to a jet event to watch an annoying pine swinging paint stirring noise maker imac bird waste 30 min of their prime flying time. It is also guaranteed that someone will observe the little kid exercising someones rudder, flap, elevator or pitot tube. No bueno!! The worst I ever witnessed was that of an individual that had just lost his BVM F100..... He had the carcass on a table well within Roscoe sticky fingers reach!!!! The owner walked away to use the restroom and when he returned his already crash damaged TITAN SE had been lifted from the table.

Keep em out

2 cents
pine swinging, paint stirring, noise maker? wow.

Wood props ( some of them) prop can be used to stir paint and they make a lot of noise... All true!

before you know it, someone is going to say "downwind turn"

I'll bet the jet guys think that they are so high and mighty that the downwind turn myth doesn't apply to them!
Now THAT'S funny!

Hi guys,
I usually refrain from getting involved in these debates, however on this topic I feel the need to voice my opinion as well. I have no problem talking to spectators and answering their questions at the meets and jet events and actually enjoy doing so, however I was at a jet event where there was a barrier(orange snow fence) to keep spectators from getting to our equipment. My jet sitting under my canopy and me sitting right in front of it in my chair and happened to hear an unusual noise behind me, turned around to see Johnny junior yanking up and down on one of my ailerons after Johnny slobberknocker senior dropped him over the barrier. My point here is how far do we have to go to to allow spectators close enough to see the planes, jets or whatever aircraft and yet keep the idiots away? I don't think anyone has come up with an idiot repellant yet.

On large events the best thing is have any spectator sign a injury / indemnity waiver upon entrance. They may not hold up 100% in court but at least it will make someone give second thoughts to doing something too stupid. Unfortunately most people dont have a lot of brain function and don't think about things unless you say to them you break you buy or you get hurt it's on you.

I don't put my planes out for the spectators to view. By the time the viewing starts my planes are broken. Too many pieces to drag out.

For all you critics, I have a question. Have you been a other JWM's??????????
Are they in anyway different from this one?
Instead of making negative remarks, why don't you make positive
ones.
Because, I don't know, when there will be other in the USA.
The guys spent a lot of their time and effort trying to get this event
going, and all you do is the same BS as always, negative criticisim.

Even if I didn't go, I applaud the team's effort in doing this event.

The rest is just pure crap.

I once used a prop to eat yogurt with, since I forgot a spoon. I'll let you have a prop but don't touch my jets.
