Good morning all,

I'm building a skygate viper. The kit came with a aluminum and carbon fiber wing tube. I was told the carbon fiber wing tube fits inside of the aluminum tube. I'm having in issue making this happen. Can anyone advise if they have the same setup. Also is anyone using a 160 turbine for this jet. I was considering using a jetsmunt 160 37/38 lbs. Thanks Paul

HI Paul,
Yes the carbon tube does go into the aluminum one to strengthen it. It will fit but takes a little working. I first sanded inside edges of both ends of the Aluminum tube and then lightly landed the full outside of the carbon tube with some 400 grit wet sandpaper. That did the trick for me. Then I used some Z-poxy finishing resin thinned a bit to mate the two together.
As for the turbine, my Viper has full smoke and also electric gear and brakes which put the weight right at 36 with a full UAT. I am using a 36 lb Rhino and find it to be a really good match, even with full fuel and smoke oil load

My tube had a sharp inside edge that needed to be removed for the carbon to fit.

Sandpaper wrapped around a wooden dowel. 8911'S will be great. I used Hitec 7955 except for the rudder which is a 7950.

I used a sharp knife to cut the inside lip of the pipe. The lip is created when they cut the tube with a tubing cutter.

What kind of flight time are you getting between the 160 and 180?

8 min with the 160SX Take off to touch down. Full throttle only on verticle flight.

36 lb thrust Rhino with full smoke. Timer set for 7 minutes which gives 2 min reserve. Use full throttle probably about half of the flight.

In comparison with a friend's Carf powered by Jetcat P180, we couldn't see much difference in flying, except verticals.
Maybe worth trying it.

I haven't put the smoke tank in yet. I will have it installed for the start of the flying season in Sept. I started flying it 6 weeks ago, now put away for the summer, 110 everyday. I have put 50 flights on it so far.

Does anyone know the distance from exhaust of turbine to the bell mouth or pipe opening? If I used the standard distance 25mm the starter unit of turbine extends past the phenolic tube. The pipe is flush or almost flush with the fiber glass tail cone cover. Has anyone had simular issues

It really depends on what turbine you are flying. Why don't you just look at your turbine manufacturer's manual and set it per their recommendations. I think I have my Rhino set at 25-28 MM.

Is that the same to opening of the partial bypass? I'm using a 180 size turbine and thought if it is to far in the partial bypass it would claspe the pipe. Any thoughts* exhaust

Well there you go! The stock pipe is built like a tank and will handle your 180 just fine.
Post some pics of the plane when you get done.

Well guys Im all done with build... still no maiden due to bad weather. Final weight is 34 lbs dry using at kingtech 180. I had to add 12oz into the nose and add pilot(7oz) to get it cg. The plane is about 12grams nose heavy. Will this be ok? Any thoughts? Thanks Paul

I started with the CG set on the rearmost hole (nearest the joiner tube) of the ply setting guage and that required 4oz of lead, but I've since removed all the lead and I guess the CG is now close to the centre of the joiner tube. At this CG, it suits my flying style and requires very little down elevator when inverted.

Stefan who designed the Viper for Carf likes a nose heavy model, so as Roger says it wants to be rear of his position for most pilots. All the ones I have flown have had the weight taken out after flying. It's a properly designed model with huge tail area so can be balanced very neutral and still be stable.

Dave

Thanks Dave and Roger. I figured as much. My cg point is at the recommended starting point. I'm sure it will be ok.
