Way back! Fuselage with no wings or spar, tails on and a little fuel in main tank. Balance on the wing fixing 6mm hole in the fuselage

How do you balance with no wings on? Is there a special technique?

For super accurate balance ( never needed on any model I have flown!) a 2mm piano wire length with hook on each end put through the wing bolt mounting hole and lift the fuselage. But like I say without a measured amount of fuel on board all these balances vary, so you can lift the fuse with a finger under the wing root lip and that is close enough. I still think on the Viper the balance could go back more and it would be happy.

The M6 spiked nut hole just in front of the gear cutout.

Dave

its about 30mm back from the spar. Canopy glass on, tails and fin on with a landing amount of fuel in the main tank.

Thanks Dave, Here is my Viper. A good friend of mine built it and only flew it 3 times before he decided that he has had it with Jets so i ended up with it. Looking forward to fly it. It will be grass runway as we have lost our magnificent jet site.

Make sure you balance it our way! Manual settings are so nose heavy!

Oesterling, thanks for those pics. I'm putting a new one together this winter. Love your work stands too; great idea and will have to make a set. They look Laser cut.
Which size landing lights are those?

the stand is not laser cut. Pure handcraft..made in 15 mm plywood. The light is from unilight.at. it's the combo kit..with 2 x 15 mm landinglight.

Another ViperJet for my local club. Three successful test flights today with my balance point. JetCat P-160RXi-B for 8 minute flights. Savox servos and a PB Mercury.

Hi Dave

Oesterling and I are putting some Viperjets together. There are a few opinions about the correct CG. I have read your article in the new issue of RC Jet International and in this thread about the rather nose heavy recommendation in the manual.

Your recommendations and way to balance the Viper is very interesting since we can reduce the weight by almost a kilo.

We are both using electron retracts but since this is heavier than the pneumatic retracts how will this effect the final balance point?

Do you have any idea where the CG is with wings attached?

Hi,
I am not answering for Dave as he is more knowledgable than me on this but I subcribe to this thread as well.
I also have a Viper jet and have balanced mine the same as one of our great fliers here in UK .

The back edge of the wing tube seems to do the trick when fully assembled for many in my opinion but there may be other views if you want a more edgy feel.

The balance is so uncritical, but we balance all the electron versions the same way. The small weight increase on the main gear just behind the balance will not make any difference. David’s point on the back edge of the tube is a bit further forward than us, but still behind the manuals position.
Go my way and you will be happy.

What about down elevator with flaps..? Is it neutral or do you mix a little down elevator on the flaps..

It depends on flap travel. Take off 20 degrees and for landing I have as much as possible, so 80-85 degrees. With this you will need 0.5mm measured at elevator root down on take off and 2.5mm landing

What about the other control surface settings on the Viper, do you use the ones from the manual..
elevator +35/-40 mm (taleoff/landing) - +20/-25 mm (fligt)
rudder 70 mm
Aileron +13/-20 mm

regards
Jan

Jan

i always set up to ‘eye’ , but I also set one elevator rate for all, you don’t need so much elevator with the correct balance point.
I would guess I went +/+ 25mm elevator and plus 13-14mm and minus 16-17mm. Rudder is maxed.
its expo that needs putting for taste and gyro/no gyro

Default question on up grading to electric gear

gonzalo, I am thinking of upgrading my 3 year old comp arf viper to electric electron gear and brakes..
were you able to mount the nose gear and use a servo for direct steering eliminating the pull pull system? were you able to keep the nose gear door.
did you use the 40 or 50 size gear.
thanks for your input.
