Enlarged Zirioli Turbinator 125% size

Bart,
Limey Bob at LDS can supply the kit and plans. I can add you to the list for canopies if you wish. I have 6-8 people asking me by Pm to add them for a canopy. I am sure Nick Jr. will be happy to see this is taking off.

Once I get pricing I will PM everyone with how and who to pay for the canopies as Nick Jr. may just want to send them to me and I ship them out or to save on double shipping cost send them directly to each of you. The canopies will be very large something like 25-27 inches long. I never expected this to take off like it has. I bet Bob is happy I contacted him about the project.

Jimmy, I just sent you an email of the progress pictures. Here's one for the group taken in room just off our deck. The room is 12 by 12 and that is a std 6' French door behind the blinds, so that will give you a size to compare the parts too. I also sent Nick the pictures to forward to Nicky and asked him about the canopies for those guys asking about one for the Turbinator 44.

Hey guys,
Never been a real big kit builder but would like to possibly try it over the winter. Couple of questions for you on the standard TURBINATOR:
Total cost to get into arf form both standard Turbinator and enlarged ?
Work a few nights a week on it, how long to complete?
Thanks guys,
Mike

Mike, either size will take about a month to build from the Short kits that people sell where you supply the straight wood pieces if you are going to work on them a few nights a week. It is not a hard build and my first one was built when I was recoupirating from surgery in nine all day long days. I have a second regular size short kit that Jimmy and I got from Nick along with the robart gear and struts that I was going to build this winter before I got the idea to blow it up to 125%. We would be willing to sell the kit with the gear and struts for 650$ plus shipping. The Arf from Shulman is now 1K$ plus the gear and shipping brings it to about 2K$ there is no ARF of the big one. The 125% short kits with plans are available from LDS and pricing depends on if you want a wood wing and stab or a foam one. I am cutting my own foam cores; But I will not cut for other builders (sorry just too big of a hassle getting the foam now and then shipping the cores for me with the wife ill). I do have a friend that will cut them though for a reasonable fee plus shipping, he is a well known sailplane flier (Troy Lawicki) who has won the AMA nats and Toledo's building contest and has his own CNC foam cutter so I can give him the files and then he can quote me a price for those interested. Nick Ziroli JR sells the plans, short kit, retracts and canopies for the std kits. I just checked the Ziroli site and the plans, kit, canopy, and retract set would be about 850$ so you could save about 100$ getting the one we have now for sale. You would still need a set of plans from Nick(60$) to build it from though as mine are not for sale.

I have so much wood that it isn't funny. All of the widows in my club call me when they need to clear out the husbands shops when they pass away. I got the last wood I bought from Lone Star that; as I was out of 48" stuff when I built the 72" Panther last winter. Decent wood and reasonable on the prices, good contest grade wood like I have in the shop is getting hard to find at any price.

Ron,
Thanks for all the info! I will give it some thought. I am just getting some ideas for a winter project. Great info throughout your post.
Thanks again,
Mike

Ron,
Speaking of that 72" Panther you mentioned in this thread, did it ever get finished before this "new" project started? Mine is really close to being finished, just need a few out of stock items from Bob. I'll be following your progress on the Turbinator closely.

Mike, I fitted the hatch this week to the fuse so that I was happy with the joint when closed up. I have about a week of evenings to be finshed the wood work on the rudder and inlets. Then it's off the table till spring for the Turbinator 125 buildups. I like to cover or paint everything that is ready all at the same time saves on the thinner on cleanup and with four big planes to paint that will be a lot of primer and wet sanding this spring. LOL.

Just for everybody's info, another customer wanted a built up wing, so that's done.
The wing is split into three pieces, just outboard of the flap rib.
We are still in the prototype stage until all the bugs are worked out.
Pic of the wing tube assy attached.
