Even though I am going to do a foam stab and wing I'll still post the process for those building it with foam flying surfaces. One thing it will show it the bagged foam process instead of piling up weights. For those of you that have never done a foam wing at all or without a vacuum system it will be enlightening as to how easy it is to do once you have the equipment.

Made progress today fuse and hatch are framed and ready to sheet. The only problem I see is I didn't lay the front hatch former over as far as the plan shows. I didn't notice that the angle of the notch in H1 was not the same as the on plan so mines going to have a little curve in the shape from the nose to the hatch. I'm claiming artistic liberty! Tomorrow night I will add the landing gear rails and finish the stringers in the rear of the fuse. Hopefully by the end of the week I'll get the tail built and the whole fuse sheeted.

Ron, I'm thinking putting the servos in as the plan calls is asking a little much of push rods. I was thinking along the lines of putting the servos in the tail surfaces considering how big they are. Let me know your thoughts. Did you say 1/16th for the sheeting? I can't remember

Thanks for all the time your putting into this thread, it's a great help.

Bob, I have two stabs cut for 1/16th sheeting and can cut yours differant with just a key stroke. I'll call you tonight to find out if you want it the same or not. I should have said that you need to fit former F-4a and F-4b's slot deeper so they fit correcttly. They were the same way on the std size one.
I see no problem with the long pushrods so long as they are braced at a couple of places. I would do that unless you want to add weight to the nose which I bet we will have to do anyway, since I have a pound in my std size one and followed the plans.
I laminated the sub formers for the motor mount area last night after the Ravens win! Sorry guys love my Ravens.I also sanded the sides to match the slope of the fuse and hatch top so I can sheet them this week along with the stabs. I'll post pics tonight.

Got the wing mount and engine mounting plates doubled up this morning and cured while I was at work. Put the wing ones in both fuses and waiting for them to dry a bit so I can fit the engine mounting plates in. I will add a corner triangle stock piece to hold them 90 degrees to the sides so they are parallel to each other. I had to notch the cutout for them to fit in between the doubled up formers (no big deal). Just wasn't in the mood to sheet the top yet.

Ron, I'll stick with the 1/16th balsa skin, no sense in changing. Got most of the stringers in tonight, maybe finish tomorrow evening. Should I hold off on building the tail until the stabs are ready? I didn't have the luxury of building the original.

It looks like 4 50oz. Dubro tanks may fit standing on end. The lip on the tank below the stopper would need to be placed inboard so as to fit up in the peak of the hatch and the fuel lines would need to turn sharply just out of the stopper. The diagonal crutch braces will need to be removed and the fuse floor will need to be modified but with a three piece wing the wing top would act to secure the tanks from falling down. maybe a thin ply floor shaped like the wing saddle would work. A little RTV could secure the tops of the tanks. I'll hit the LHS. tomorrow and pick up a second tank so I can do a trail fit. If I get a little creative with the plumbing I think I can get the clunk to work correctly. I've seen several scale models with 4 tanks plus a UAT so I don't see any reason for it not to work. I'll keep you guys posted with pictures this week.

Ron, I just happen to have some drop tanks for EB's Phantom and kinda mocked it up last night. Round dosen't seem to look quite right but I took some card stock and made a shallow diamond shape and it seemed more pleasing to the eye. Makes it look a little Panther...ish.

Bob, if you stop by the house on the way home one day this week you can get a set of stab cores from me.

Who is cutting your wing cores? I have a Wren 44 sized Turbinator on my bench and foam wing cores would save me time.

Yes, noted, replacement parts will be on the way.
it was the result of a previous wing joint decision, which was changed to be outboard of the flaps.
Thanks keith.

I have a friend (Troy Lawicki) who cuts cores for a fee on a cnc foam cutter. I build the files and he cuts them for a set fee per type of foam and size. Send me the root cord, tip cord, span, tip set back distance and I can get you a price on a set of cores.

Got the wing mounting rails in tonight. Will post pics in the morning. They are cut out of 1/2th aircraft ply 7/8th wide 7 1/2 long. I will add a 1/8th ply in the rear where the bolts will go through. I am also going to glass them on the top side to the formers with some carbon and cross drill through the side and put a few 1/8th dowel pins in for shear loads so that I have more than three glue joints holding them in.

Ron, I will call you tomorrow about stopping by. Didn't have a chance today to look for a second 50oz tank to trail fit, maybe tomorrow. Finished the front landing gear rails and the stringers tonight. I think I might get all the rough sanding done before I start to build the more delicate tail pieces, no sense creating hanger rash before it's done. With my low basement ceiling it takes a little forthought before moving and flipping this big bird.

Well after another weekend of being ill and working at GPA; I got back on the fuses last night. Here's the rudder LE's. One is drying and the second is just unpinned from the plans. Looks like I pi**ed off a lot of arf assemblers in my other post/poll. A guy recently bought an ARF jet from someone who wanted to be a "Jet pilot" with no building and little flying experience and saw this thread and that I live near him so to speak. This guy hunts me down at GPA and get this; wants me for free to fix his mistakes because " Your a modeler and you love to do this kind of sh*T besides you have all the tools and stuff I don't have or want to buy. I just want to fly". I said then you are out of luck because I don't work for free for guys who want me to do all the hard stuff with my talent and tools because they have neither and don't want to pay me for my time. He got mad and cussed me out while he was walking out of the shop. As he was walking away I said "If you were a modeler and not an arfer you wouldn't be mad at me; you would be home building and enjoying a part of the hobby that you don't want to be bothered with".

Ron, I used to get the same attitude from wannabe race car drivers "Whatta mean you want to get paid I thought you guys loved this so much you'd work all night for free cause you love it." Takes all kinds. Now back to the good stuff, I didn't get much done over the weekend either. With a wife and two daughters keeping our fleet of cars on the road can be taxing at times. With this first spell of cold weather both daughters informed me that thier cars didn't warm up in the mornings. Two thermostat replacements and two broken bolt extractions later all is good until the wife mentions her van has a strange smell. One PCV valve and two valve cover gaskets later she's happy but it's 6:30PM Sunday. Done just in time to see Tebow spank the Steelers. About 9:00PM I turn the lights on in my shop and realize I'm too worn out for model building. Modern life sucks!

The note for the stab dihedrel calls for 1 1/2" under each tip. Should this be increased? Maybe tonight will be more productive.

Like, Wouldn't it be if your old stab is say 10" and set at 1 1/2". If your new larger stab is say 12" Than put a mark at 10" area and set it to 1 1/2" and let the extra wind up where it want's too????

Yes that would work but we need the angle to cut the root end on the table saw anyway because we are building it with a foam core stab and wing. The correct angle is 5.53 degrees so we can round that to 5.5 for ease of cutting sake. The distance out is 19.375 for rise of 1.87 inches.
