Saab Draken expert needed
My 1/5 scale Saab Draken from Peter Liebetrau will be ready to fly shortly.
I have decided on a paint scheme and need some help finding graphics for one of the tail markings. I have a high resolution of the F10 squadron badge and the 3rd group swordfish insignia, but I don't have one of the insignia thats in between them on the tail. Anyone?
I bought a 1:48 scale plastic kit of the correct plane, but the Hassegawa markings are junk. It does not show the insignia either.
Any help would be highly appreciated

The wing was called F10, now home of the Koenigsegg factory. I were among the last to service the 3:rd squadron on the F10 wing. The facilities of 3:rd are now a museum which you can contact here http://www.engelholmsflygmuseum.se/word/?page_id=21
The Swordfish came with two diffrent texts, "Mad ger styrka" which translates to Foog gives power, or "Alltid på jakt" which translates to Always on the hunt.
the F10 planes were called by the 10:th letter "J" and 3:rd were yellow as you know from the badge, so the callsign were Johan gul(Johan Yellow)
I'll ask a friend and chime in tomorrow about your missing graphics

Probably one of these...
I remebmer "Axe" he was an instructor back then.
also try Magnus, http://www.mbs-rcmodels.se/ when buying a kit from him you get a 30page booklet with the history of Draken too hehe, he probably knows.

John, after you get your markings squared away, Frank Alvarez can certainly answer any questions about flight charactaristics or 'things to keep in mind' of the Drakken.
... Frank is on his 5th year flying this massive jet, pushed by a Simjet Nexus.

Mike,
Yes, Frank's build tread is bookmarked and I am sure I'll put in a call to him before first flight. The plan is to have the jet ready for Kentucky Jets. I also got some good photo documentation of the designers build via David Searles. So, the building phase is pretty much covered.
Right now I'm getting the markings done and collecting scale documentation. I've got about 6 Draken books so far and have been lucky enough to find top, bottom and side view photos of my actual subject.
Power will be a JetCat 160 most likely, unless someone with experience flying this plane tells me that's not enough for this 45 lbs dry weight jet. I may go for the new P-180, but I hate to buy new turbines when I have one sitting in a box unused.

Hej John,
It's a marking with the Flag from Skåne as background with something white on top. I found it on Twobobs llc website. Can't find it on any Swedish websites. Fins RH side was normal placement four ground crew insignia. Could be something special with this s/n in this livery. This a/c flew after I left the RSAF and I was at the neighboring Wing (non-J35).
Give Twobobs llc in Ca. a call they might be able to help you. If not, I can call the museum for you. Even though the a/c is actually in Gothenburg nowdays.
Rgds,
Thomas

Hej Thomas,
Great find on the Twobobs site. Thank you. The decal placement sheet will be very valuable even though the decals are out of print. I'll give them a call.
I sent emails to a couple of other people from the F10 kammeratforening. Hopefully someone recognizes the insignia and responds.
Henke, do you know what the typical underwing armament would consist of in the early 1990's? Sidewinder and Falcon missiles only?
Thanks

On Jim Brown's video page about 20-25 down there is a video of Frank Alvarez's Draken. May be of some help as there is quite a bit of it in the pits during start up.

Well, I found a site that makes paper airplanes with a fairly good drawing of the insignia. At least now I know what to search for :-) Or, maybe recreate in photoshop.
I like this scale research stuff. Always fun to do a little internet detective work.

Hello JC,
I have been folowing your thread, and it now apears as though you are reaching the finish point.
I would be delighted to chat with you regarding the flying, and maintainence of your large J-35 Draken.
As you know, I have been campaining this wonderful jet for the past five years, and now, I am glad to say, that it is ready yet again to blaze the skys over various jet events. It has most certainly provided the crowd with a very unusual shape and performance to remember. Please let me know how I can be of service to you as you begin the prep work for your first flight with this magnificant jet.
Frank.
P.S. Here is some motivation for you guys!;

I've got the marking!
It's a 3rd Komp.F10 marking (Ground Crew 3rd Komp. serving 3rd sq.). Only seen on s/n 35586 in this livery. The County Skåne in its Red/Yellow colors with the contrails of 3 Drakens in formation breaking off. The picture contains a "Copy right tag in white letters) I guess you can erase them?
I even got a close up photo of the whole tail from the Plastic Modeler i Sweden.
Do you have an email and I can send it in full res.
Thomas

That's a good basis for some Photoshop cleanup. Sidewinders and Falcons are ordered in 1/5 scale.
Frank, I'll give you a call. Hopefully we will get a chance to fly them together somewhere. Your Draken looks great. I grew up with seeing them at local air shows and think it is one of the most beautiful plane shapes ever. The real thing is loud!!! I have two of the large Liebetrau kits. The other has been with a builder for almost 4 years being converted to a RDAF two seater. But, I don't have much luck with builders keeping their time promises when it comes to major conversions LOL. But, hopefully one day they will sit next to each other.
Do you feel that 36 lbs of blow is enough for this plane?
