Default paint gun recomendation

Will apreciate aspray paint gun recomendiation. I´m not a profesional painter and this gun wil be used for my model rc painting needs

Have been using a small hobbico aribrush with good results, butthis time the project is a jet and not a small model and applying primer with it has been tedius. Will no use it for the painting.

I plan to use the PPG Omni Au single stage polyutherane paint which I´m familiar with in previus projects with good results.

Will like to get the best bang for the money but have learned being cheap`is expensive so my top will be about $ 180.00 for a gun.

Questions

Mini or standard Gun?

For sure want low air deman spray gun since don´t have a big air compresor.

Have research the fallowing

Devilbiss stating line of spray guns

TCPGLOBAL brand of spray guns

Eastwood coucourse line of spray guns

For sure are better guns but cost 3 to 7 times the above.

Thanks

Juan

Don't know if you guys have Harbor Freight stores down there or maybe you can hit their website. Get the purple anodized HVLP gravity feed gun $59.99 on sale. I've been a painter most of my life and I'ved used them all, Binks, Graco, Sato. This HF gun sprays as good as my 600.00 Devilbiss when new but it won't last forever. After about six months of daily use it will make a good primer gun. Most hobbyist will never wear one out. You can turn the preasure down pretty low and still get a good fan so it works well with smaller compressors.

$.02 added

Good luck

Ditto that on the HF gun. I figured it would be a one or 2 time use item and that something internal might rust after first couple of cleanings. But not so. Great gun for the price.

HF guns are crap. I had the purple one and was good for 3 to 4 projects, after that it would not keep a setting which is critical to a good paint job. Luckily I only ppaid $35 a couple years ago.

For about $100 you can get a Finex 1000 by Sharpe. Excellent product and works great for small to medium models.
I'm not a pro but I've gotten really good results with this one, specially shooting clear.

Good luck on your project

I'm using the Testors A7778 for the art part and small scale details: http://www.testors.com/product/13694...l_Airbrush_Set
And the Twin-action fine needle pistol air brush from Hobby King when I need to cover the model big areas IE fuselage and wings. you will be surprised from the great results with that one... (23$ !!!)

Have seen de the finex 1000 seem like a nice alternative for price and quality.

Any coment on this spray guns? Seems this is the size for the ultimate hobby spray gun not to small and not to big and easy clean.

Ebay is crowded with this type of gun in diferent brands, which for sure are china. Think the original is the Binks model 115

This is the devilbiss ega 503

This is the sharpe detail gravity feed and have a similar with siphon.

WHY SO EXPENSIVE this small spray guns compared to the bigger and same brand guns?

For the moment my option are finex 1000 or eastwood concourse mini. They are about $ 80-$110. The Centra Neumatic gun seems intereresting but there are mix reviews.

Is there a good clone brand for the Binks model 115, seem to be a nice primer gun for the hobby use?

Sata for sure is nice buy not in my range.

Thanks

Juan

I was going to stay out of this one but decided to offer my 2 cents anyway.

Everyone knows I prefer Sata, they are second to none in their spray ability, there are only a handful of other guns that even compare to the Sata's.

However, here are some of my thoughts on other brands.....

ALL of the no name brand guns sold by Harbor Freight, Canadian Tire stores, home depot's, etc are cheap for a reason. They don't work well in comparison. Sure, they'll shoot some paint out, so will a spray bottle, and for modeling purposes, you can lay down a finish that would be acceptable to many people. However, if you ever need a part, throw it away, if you ever want to get better than an OK paint job, be prepared for a lot of headaches. I would never recommend trying to spray ANYTHING but solid colors, don't bother with metallics or pearls. They spray pattern, while it may seem to fan out ok, will not atomize the paint well, nor is it an even pattern across the fan. Back when I was hobby painting I tried the cheap guns with cheap results. When I finally dropped the money for my first Sata I'd wished I had just done it in the first place. Even for hobby stuff, good equipment always a good investment.

Devilbiss, Sharpe, Iwata, etc, any name brand gun that you would buy at an actual auto paint store are going to be far better choices than the others. I don't care if an experienced painter tells you that their harbor freight gun works just as well as their devilbiss, but only for a short amount of time, I'd want to see the sprayed finish to really believe that and I'd want to see a fine metallic or pearl sprayed over a large surface with it.
Turning down the air pressure to work with a smaller compressor is horrible advice as well, doesn't matter what gun it is, they are ALL designed to spray at a certain pressure, it will still spray at a lower pressure, but your paint atomization will suffer, your paint flow will be awful, you'll end up with orange peel from hell.

If you want to paint your own models, make the investment. I've never understood how people will build an expensive model like a jet or even less expensive models, and then want to finish them with crap equipment or crap paint. There is the other side of it, paint is expensive, the cheap guns will not allow good atomization or flow, to get a good finish you end up using far more paint for decent coverage.

People think the Sata Minijets are expensive, and compared to the rest, they are, but they sip paint, they lay it on more effectively than ANY other gun in their range, they have a great range of needle sizes, they are all around the best gun for modeling you can buy. I've seen them brand new for as little as $300, I've seen them used in excellent condition for around $150. What you spend extra in the gun you will save in paint over just a couple of models. Hell, we'll spend countless dollars on blingy electronic flashy doo dad's that you can't even see with the canopy on, but cheap out when it comes to the equipment used to put a good finish on a model.

Buying a good gun won't make you a good painter, far from it, but with crappy equipment, even a good painter has a tough time getting GOOD results.

I agree with Jeremy. (which is not all that surprising given how well he can put paint on).

Painting is hard enough without having to deal with inferior tools.

Ego fest? No, not at all. Your opinion is a valuable as the next guys. Our opinions differ, that's all.

Jeremy's point, and my ditto to it refer to the fact that quality, good quality equipment, makes the job so much easier, allows you to do almost anything your talents and imagination can come up with. Buying something knowing you are going to throw it away after a little doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. The recommendation is buy the best you can afford, if you have to save a little, so be it. The same advise anyone on here would give concerning a radio, a turbine etc..

I refrained from chiming in more just because of the idea of your last post, suggest something of quality and get labeled as having an ego. Really? Then I guess all the JR vs. Futaba, JetCat vs. Jet Central and so on have no merit either. Just a bunch of egomaniacs that can't get past themselves. That's banging your head.

Buy the HF gun and have fun. Drop it, throw it away. Lose a part, throw it away. Spray a pearl, good luck. My opinion. Backed by 31 years spraying.

What ego? Prove me wrong, spray a metallic single stage Omni product with your harbor freight gun, take it out in the sun, and show me a panel with no stripes or leopard spotting and I'll happily say you're a freaking amazing painter, but then show me somebody that doesn't know how to fine tune their paint mixture and air pressure get the same results with a harbor freight gun and I'll maybe believe the gun is even close to the same quality.

Then show me a panel sprayed with low air pressure with a harbor freight (or any gun) so that a small air compressor can keep up that doesn't have terrible orange peel.

My statement isn't based on ego, nor is it based on internet advice, it's based on experience in painting high end cars and motorcycles for a long time as well as painting RC models. Frankly I couldn't care less what guns people buy, but when a person comes on asking about a GOOD gun and setting a budget of around $180, I can't understand why ANYONE who is a "professional" painter would recommend a Harbor Freight gun.

Well gentleman maybe someday I will be blessed enough to sit down with you fellas and discuss custom painting resumes. I think you'll be surprised! But until then I'll stick to my recommendation for a cheap gun that will meet the needs of an average amateur painter.

Over and out.............

The Harbour Freight, Central Pneumatic guns are very good. Been using two for 5 years including for the high gloss finish on my AW Hawks. I use them for 2k primer, colour and clear, fully controllable and give superb finish. Fantastic value and perfect for occasional use by modellers.

Regards,

David.
