A chuckle? I'll have you know I had rum and coke blasting out of my nose after seeing that pic...lol

Love build threads, and not bashing threads. Keep it up Shaun.

Shaun, I like the honeycomb, anything with food is good. Thanks for taking the time to add pics to this build early on so that we can see the pieces.

For the other person -
woops,
NO I didnt post it twice on purpose; sometimes RCU sticks, maybe it has never happened to you. Hope it didn't waste your time.

Hey Shaun,
Going to be fun to watch your build, mine has been a long slow build. I burned out when I got to the paint stage so a friend helped me out. Going to start my install this week.... I just picked mine up from my bud that did the paint for me. Mine is set up for twin full size Dynamax conversions done by Tam. It's will be running two sets of 12s 8000 mah packs.....6000 watts per fan. So will be cool to see the Dynamax at work again in the twin F-18 just like old school ( just lots more power )

here is a teaser video

Wow!

What a great looking bird! Did you use the stock inlets? I think those are probably all buggered up for efficient running with your fans, aren't they?

Thanks guys... I smoothed out the stock ducts and moved the fans back about 8 inches with a straight extension. This give a nice straight smooth shot to the fans giving the air time to clean up. I have so much weight in lipos that moving the fans back works out perfect. I will have the splitter plate on there too

I have 10 lbs in lipos that I don't want to burn off in flight...lol

I'm not expecting a rocket but think it will fly nice.... looks like I'll be 40lbs loaded and ready to fly

Hi,

So, on my off-time, I started doing some prep work on this. I've snapped the plywood parts out of their sheets and assembled the stab bearing boxes. Nothing fancy there. I've seen a few guys build this bird and redo this section or add a bunch of reinforcement to it, but it's totally unnecessary if assembled per instructions. Contrary to the instructions, though, the bearing boxes will be glued to the bulkheads outside of the airplane and shoved back there and glued in place when cured.

I pulled out the other bulkheads to ponder mods. For the twin-turbine ones I've built, I added a 1/8'' carbon plate doubler to the front and back of the front main bulkhead, but those bulkheads had far less meat to them as they were cut to accommodate twin inlets. This one is plenty good-to-go for single turbine use, especially since it already has an additional 1/8'' ply doubler factor installed.

The rear main bulkhead comes with a supplied 1/8'' aluminum doubler which is epoxied and bolted onto the 1/4'' ply bulkhead.

The stab shafts are 8mm titanium with a steel cross-pin. The cross-pin slides into a slot cut into the (very wide) hard balsa block which is glued into the balsa-sheeted foam-core stab. There's an 8-oz carbon cloth sandwiched between the balsa and the foam in the stab too. When the stab root is capped with ply, the root side of the cross-pin is encapsulated between the balsa block and the ply root with epoxy, too. The result is a stab which 'ain't goin' nowhere', and will never develop slop or play in the shaft.

I'm going to use the scale aileron and flap hinges, which are a lot bigger than I thought they were. The go through the bottom skin, the balsa I'll insert in the wings and all the way to the top skin. Each flap and aileron only has two hinges per (scale).

Note the strategic use of honeycomb in my tail bulkheads, inspired by recent scientific discoveries regarding proper tail-section design.
Hey what's the best store to buy that honeycomb ??

Seriously?

Not even a 'courtesy chuckle' for my Honey Comb bit?
Are you kidding me? I laughed out loud so hard my girl thought I had finally cracked. Brilliant!

Thanks much Dantley! it's a great kit....nothing is really hard it's just a ton of sanding and shaping for the wood parts.
Maybe after the burn out wears off I might be willing to build a kit again.... but at the moment I'm telling myself never again

they sure do look nice.... there the best looking F-18 in my book. I've been dreaming of this plane for 20 years so it feel great to have it so close to done

Ron, didn't you purchase a set of LEX fences from me? Didn't see them in your "paint" video.

Hey Paul... I sure did... those babies are painted and ready to glue on. I start the install next week.

I wanted to put the LEX's on last so I don't bump them while working on it....

I'll send you some pics when she is all done and post here

Hi Ron : So cool seeing your F18 almost finished ... Tons of work and I can see your frustration as you were getting through it. I am glad to see that you are almost at the end of the tunnel . You will have a great airplane . It is the best F18 out there . I just ordered two for me and a friend and am looking forward to this build thread for all the little tricks..

Hey Peter! long time no talk.... thanks much for the kind words, she is getting there.
No doubt I had many ups and downs, starts and stops along the way.... but I'm so happy with the way it's coming out it was worth the pain

Can't wait to see your builds, I'm sure they will be great

take care
Ron
