Default RE: Redesign/build FEJ

Old F-14 wing fix.. The original skin around the pivot box is just a thin layup of carbon cloth balsa and paint . That's all there is to carry the load and that's the failure point in the great video from Germany.. I'm going to remove that skin and replace it with a carbon plate that runs down the wing and attaches to the "spar" and wing skin to transfer the load to the aluminum pivot point. All the shear load is concentrated on the round lip of the aluminum and in the failure pictures you can see it sheared right off.

I am reinforcing my fej f16 1/8 scale. its takeoff weight is 29 lbs. The stock pipe weight 1 lb 4oz. Is this heavy for a pipe this size? Can someone tell me first hand what Tams pipe weighs for this jet?

I have already lost 1 lb by removing gear for functioal canopy. Did LOTs of work on front gear I think It will hold up now. The stab mounts and servo mounts in the tail are VERY SCARY. U did some work here but need more.

Hi Wap,

I'm not sure it can help you but I can give you an idea what I think. and this is my story of my F-16.
I also have FEJ F-16 1/6 size with honey comb and direct drive control newly introduced. I was so surprised when I got this jet on my hand because there was no elevator support with double bearing in and control linkage also even for high speed flight.
Commonsensically it should have bearing for this kind high pressure and drag connection parts. Even on the wing for direct drive pin hole, there is no durable and hard part like steel or titanium to prevent slop.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=11277545

So I have communicated with FEJ and I requested to supply parts to replace that to previews control system a few days ago. But they didn't reply final answer. And their phone still has been powered off.
My plan is that I will remove current plastic elevator hole and install previews elevator support with bearing and reinforce with plywood with carbon to prevent any potential torsion or bending at rear section.

I'm not sure this is right or wrong solution because I'm not an engineer in this kind of field. but with my short knowledge I decided to go with this to protect any possible failure to injure my jet and even Innocent civilian even more weight. I don't like direct drive anyway...
This is my big concern and I do keep an eye on FEJ threads nowadays.

PS, you can see some photos below, First one is my jet without bearing support. And the parts bearing support is from Skymaster I think.
and another airframe is from FenderBean his F-16 is previews than me.

Suhakk

thanks for the information.  i pretty sure that i have bearings in mine.  my elevators move very easy.  i am concern about the hole that the pen sticks in will start to develop slop in the future.  i will keep a close look out.   i like the old system better.

Ali has about 20 flights on his f16 1/5 with the direct drive system with no issues, but i thinks he his going to change it back to the old system.

Here is the interior of the latest F-18F 1/7 stabs. I am reinforcing around the bolts with ply and hydrsol to prevent them from moving in the carbon fiber honeycomb.

Your mods are the most sensible I have seen. You understand the problem correctly. The last picture is unbelievable. There is 100% certainty it will fail!
The formers you install must provide rigid structure and prevent torsion in the vertical of the fuselage. It is important that the bulkhead is one piece all the way round for best results. Also if you can add wide "stringers" between bulheads and cap them to make a "box" it will be Very strong.
Andre

Thanks for your advice. It is very good idea to add wide stringers between bulkheads. I will apply it.

I have tried to get them from FEJ, not Skymaster. Because my jet came from FEJ.
At the first time they reponded me to send the parts as I want but now no more responding.
Their phone was also powered off.
And I also sent email to Skymaster, but no responding too. it's been a quite long time.
I don't understand why they respond really fast when customer got interesting to buy their jet, after selling no more feedback or very late responding. All the same.
I am not begging to get it free of charge. I'll buy it with paying for.
what about you all? same as me?

You know.. if people would spend their money on products that are well-engineered and tested, instead of looking ONLY at the price point, all to try and save a buck or two, they wouldn't have to spend so much time and money re-engineering things. The fact that this sort of thread even exists is a sad commentary on the state of our hobby.

Rudi,
How is he main landing gear mounts holding up? You posted a picture awhile back showing some fatigue. I was fiddling with mine and thought maybe some plywood plates glued to fuselage skin between LG mounting plates and the enging mount plywood. Thinking maybe it would stiffen the area up a bit and better let the landing loads get transmitted to the fuselage. It would be a verticle piece as large as can fit, get a littel I beam action.
Did your wing mod went well much better than original design. Many thanks.

That's actually a failure due to a large moment but I think that's what you're saying. The top and bottom plate is a good idea but so is the shear in this location. So think of it has making a plate girder and you'll have it ...meaning the "shear web" is important here and the composition/tieing together of all elements and bonded well.

F-18F 1/7 stabs
Measured where the pivot is on the Mac and added weight to make it 1.5 oz tail heavy to deal with landing and transport shock.

MAC is at 20.1% so should work very well. Added the weight through the opening I made to reinforce the shaft. Used bb's mixed with gorilla glue and a little water, worked very nice. Tested the process on the old stabs then cut open to show how it worked and the internal construction, that way I did not have to cut the new stabs too much. Will measure the F-14 stab tomorrow and see where it is.

Really is a shame you have to cut up a brand new jet that you paid for to do all that just to feel safe about flying your jet.
